This article deals with the recent rise of populist tendencies and their meaning in contemporary democracies within the EU. It stresses the importance of two interrelated and interconnected processes that provide a fertile ground for the emergence of different types of populism – crisis of parliamentary multi-party democracy and pressures of supranational integration and globalisation. The article is relevant for the project from its empirical and methodologically-comparative point of view.

This review article deals with the concept of meritocracy and tries to address the question of limitations of meritocratic allocation of human resources in a knowledge-based economy and society. The first part of the article discusses meritocracy and different types of societies. Next, the article connects the concept of meritocracy with education and the question of measuring merit. The last part of the article addresses meritocracy in relation to equalities and inequalities in society and relationships between egalitarianism and meritocracy on the example of Slovenian society.
