COBISS.SI-ID: 265206272At the occasion of the change on the Japanese imperial throne for the first time in 30 years, the programme undertakes a historical analysis of how the Yamato dynasty managed to survive through the centuries and through various events that have been shaking the land of the rising sun for the past 1500 years and still keep the throne? In a conversation with dr. Luka Culiberg the programme reveals how the role of the emperor in society changed over the course of centuries, how the emperors themselves changed Japanese history and how the imperial house managed to overcome all civil wars, invasions, famines, technological and ideological revolutions and natural disasters that shook Japan without being overthrown by a rival aristocratic family.

COBISS.SI-ID: 55723779In this paper presented at the 2019 Workshop on the Use of Language Resources, organised by the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL) in Tokyo, we analysed the use of dictionaries by non-kanji background learners of Japanese while reading texts of their own choice. In order to investigate the factors that underlie success and failure during the look-up process, we analysed a subset of the "Corpus of reading by non-native speakers of Japanese" developed at NINJAL. The corpus consists of think-aloud protocols by learners reading a Japanese text using reference tools of their choice while explaining in their mother tongue what they understood. We found most learners experience difficulties at every step of their look-up processes, but also have successful look-up strategies. The difficulties and strategies we described can be usefully applied to the development of training material for dictionary use instruction.
