This work was designed to investigate the influence of artificial aeration on the sludge decomposition process in mesocosm sludge treatment reed beds (STRBs). During the entire observation period of 1.5 years, O2 concentrations in the upper part of the filter were significantly higher in the artificially aerated beds. Overall, passive aeration proved to be similarly efficient as active aeration and could therefore be considered for application in a full-scale system.

Although there are numerous studies describing the positive influence of legumes as cereal pre-crops, little information exists on the specific crop rotation soybean–triticale. Besides that, fertilization of soybean is very complex due to its symbiosis with rhizobia where mineral nitrogen could have negative effect, therefore new soil conditioners, e.g. zeolite, need to be examined. Regression analysis revealed that triticale grain yield (average 5537 kg/ha) was highly dependent (R2?=?0.927) on initial SMN content, left after soybean harvest.

Root-knot nematodes are considered the most important group of plant-parasitic nematodes due to their wide range of plant hosts and subsequent role in yield losses in agricultural production systems. Chemical nematicides are the primary control method, but ecotoxicity issues with some compounds has led to their phasing-out and consequential development of new control strategies, including biological control. We evaluated the nematicidal activity of Bacillus firmus I-1582 in pot and microplot experiments against Meloidogyne luci. This study shows the ability of hyperspectral imaging to rapidly assess the success of biological measures for pest control.
