The invention relates to a process of wood mineralization using carbonates and / or hydroxides to improve the essential properties of wood, i.e. fire properties, fungal resistance and mechanical properties. The wood mineralization method is a two stage process; namely in the first stage the wood is impregnated with an impregnating solution of metal acetoacatate(s), such that it penetrates deep into the structure of the wood, followed by the after-treatment phase, where metal acetoacetate(s) is converted into carbonate(s) and / or hydroxide(s). The advantages of the mineralization process proposed over and above the processes used to date are that (1) carbonate(s) and / or hydroxide(s) are formed only when the impregnating solution penetrates deep into the wood’s structure, (2) the process is more environmentally friendly, and (3) it is simpler.
