Manuscript songbooks as a very important source have only partly been taken into account in research on religious folk songs and in the processes of song translations form different language traditions and the processes of folklorization of art songs. This article analyzes the reasons for researchers’ lack of interest of in this topic, and it presents the problems of genre demarcation in manuscript songbooks.

The article represents the ethnographic description of cantors and funeral singers and their activities in bilingual space of Prekmurje Region in Slovenia and Raba Valley in Hungary, in both catholic and protestant context. The research is focused on music actors related to liturgies and funerals, therefore main question deal with song repertoire and with the role cantors and funeral singers have for minority community.

The monograph ('Listen to My Voice. Itinerant Singers in Slovenia') discusses various groups of itinerant singers in Slovenia and their creativity in the period spanning from the times of former musicians called igrci to the rise of the radio. Critically considering primary sources and unknown or overlooked testimonies, the monograph gives a new view not only on the song creativity but also on the society where it flourished. With a special attention to the songs transferred from one ethnic group to the other and to the multilingual songs it reveals the importance of itinerant singers as transmitters between different cultures.
