The Public Opinion Survey (SJM) 2018 places "Spatial and Environmental Values" as a special set of otherwise standardly conducted research. The set is designed to be tied to the methodological and performance parameters of the general survey, so cross-analytical and statistical processing of aggregated data is possible.

Slovenian Public Opinion 2018 covers 4 thematic blocks covering national and international research: Social Networks and Social Resources (ISSP 2017), Values of Space and Environment, Use of New Technologies / Internet, and “Mirror” of Public Opinion. The survey is based on a representative sample (realized sample N = 1047) of the population of the Republic of Slovenia over 18 years of age. The survey has been running since 1968. Most of the questions are repeated year after year, which gives the research a great deal of comparative value over time.

The first survey entitled "Spatial and Environmental Values" was carried out by the Centre for Spatial Sociology (CPS) at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, within the CRP project "Slovenia's Competitiveness 2001-2006". The key question was how contradictory common societies can be, ie. public development goals, and individual individualistic, ie. private values, bring each other closer. The aim of the research was to find out how the population of Slovenia perceives the environment or the place in which they live and the processes in it. The second survey, conducted in 2018, entitled "Opinion Survey of Social Values on Space and the Environment: A Longitudinal Study Between 2003 and 2018", addresses the more detailed identification of (inconsistent) national spatial strategies with individuals' increasing reflectivity on environmental beliefs and ways of using space. A more accurate measuring instrument was developed to analyze the predicted change in population preferences following dispersal or conciseness of residence. Shifts in the value pattern of the Slovenian population are discussed in connection with the trends of accelerated social differentiation in space and new lifestyles of living, working, mobility and leisure. The data file covers only the variables that appeared in both surveys.

The research was carried out by the Center for Spatial Sociology (CPS) at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, within the CRP project "Slovenia's Competitiveness 2001-2006". The aim of the research was to find out how the inhabitants of Slovenia perceive the environment or the place in which they live and the processes in it through a field survey. In doing so, it was also essential to take into account the actual environmental situation in Slovenia, with important factors such as eg varying degrees of environmental degradation, the presence of different types of negative environmental impacts, and socio-economic conditions in a given area. 1005 respondents answered the survey.
