The paper presents the results of a study on parking standards conducted among the experts involved in developing municipal spatial plans, along with an overview of parking standards in more than 50 municipalities in Slovenia. The study shows that, although parking problems pose a considerable challenge in towns and cities, the experts’ awareness of how to use parking standards to meet these challenges, is still not sufficiently developed.

Sustainable urban mobility plan (SUMP) is a relatively new approach to transport and mobility planning in Slovenia. The biggest steps in this field were taken in 2016 when more than 60 municipal SUMPs were developed. Through the development and implementation several challenges were reported by local communities related to Municipal spatial plans. A study was carried out to establish current level of integration. The approach combined a survey and structured interviews among experts leading the development process of both types of documents, as well as experts managing spatial and transport planning in local communities. Results showed that current level of integration is relatively low. Even though experts from both fields were often involved in development of both documents, objectives, targets and measures are not equally included in both plans even if the topics overlap.

Sustainable urban mobility planning concept as a holistic approach to traffic planning in cities is in recent years gaining its importance throughout Europe. Sustainable urban mobility plans (SUMP) are at its core. Preparation and implementation of high quality SUMPs demands additional knowledge and resources as well as comprehensive support from higher levels of government. More experienced countries tackle these through National SUMP programmes through which they establish centralization of all SUMP-connected activities, funding and capacity building. That such a comprehensive support is of great importance prove also results of the research conducted within the European projects CIVITAS PROSPERITY and CIVITAS SUMPs-Up in 2017. The research covered 28 European countries. Slovenia, developing already some elements of the National SUMP programme for the past few years, was also part of this research. That SUMPs are most successful in countries with effective and comprehensive national or regional support is the key message of this research. The aim of this paper is to present the key results of the above-mentioned research with a focus on situation in Slovenia as well as to define the framework conditions and activities for renewal and improvement of Slovenia%s National SUMP programme.
