In sustainable development of careers in tourism (Gorenak 2016) the level and quality of education plays a vital role. As Cooper (2010) argues, tourism education and tourism sector represent two different communities of practice which has meant that knowledge transfer in tourism has been traditionally slow to develop. The aim of this research was to identify the competences the Slovenian tourism sector needs from higher educated employees. We have thus performed 5 focus groups with altogether 20 participants. The results were in-line with international predictions on tourism education futures (Sheldon et al. 2008). The needed competences all demand a transition in tourism education from the cognitive domain to more affective domain (Bloom et al. 1956, 1964). In other words, what the Slovenian tourism sector needs from higher education is more “character building” with competences such as grit, emotional intelligence and hospitality, innovativeness and a capacity to learn/adapt to ever faster changes in tourism.
F.18 Transfer of new know-how to direct users (seminars, fora, conferences)
COBISS.SI-ID: 2048340307Workshop for higher education teachers on the topic of preparing learning outcomes and interconnecting individual parts of the curriculum. The workshop was attended by higher education teachers from three Slovenian universities and independent higher education institutions. The workshop presented a methodological approach, which was also used in the analysis within the TUR-KOM project, and we prepared tools for participants to better plan the pedagogical process and follow the objectives of the curriculum.
