The contribution represents a synthesis of several years of research work focused on the early 16th c. suit of armour made by the Nuremberg master armourer Valentin Siebenbürger, one of the more prominent artefacts from the collection of the NMS. Precise measurements, metallography and surface hardness testing were used to reconstruct the technology of the manufacture, the authenticity of the armour and later restoration treatment.

The monograph brings the first complete publication of the comparatively small but historically significant collection of seals at the NMS. The thorough analysis of catalogued objects is further supplemented by an overview of the collection provenance and sigillography, a topic long overlooked by the Slovenian historiography.

The exhaustive bilingual monograph published in conjunction with a major museum exhibition represents a modern snythesis of the development of metallurgy in Slovenia from the earliest periods to the current condition and potentials of the modern industry. It was the result of collaboration between the leading metallurgists and museum experts underlining the economic and social role of metallurgy as well as the wealth of frequently overlooked objects of cultural or technical heritage.

The paper presents detailed analyses of eight examples of early modern period torso armour from the collection of the NMS. Precise thickness measurements and highly innovative 3D modelling were used to explain the nature of their construciton and highly sophisticated design principles that led toward a compromise between optimal protection while at the same time reducing the overall mass. The pioneering methodology represents a wholly new approach toward the study of body armour.

The NMS owns one of the more significant European collections of medieval swords. These extraordinary artefacts were never subjected to systematic studies until our collaboration with one of the leading archeometallurgists. The paper brings the publication of the first part of the metallographic analyses of medieval swords from the NMS colleciton.
