The need for availability of published data, available through public databases, is increasing. The quantity and quality of biological data, such as species lists and species distributions, strongly depends on editing and curating the databases, and is bottlenecked by volunteering work of few database-editors. This opinion letter proposes a model how database editing could be incorporated into routine research with minimal changes of publishing policy, practices in database curating and taxonomic rules.
