The book of proceedings brings together contributions, submitted to the international conference Mapping the spaces of modernist cities within the context of CIAM's Athens charter, which is result of the applied national project Mapping the Urban Spaces of Slovenian Cities from the Historical Perspective: Modernism in Nova Gorica and its Contexts (L6-8262), financed by the Slovenian Research Agency, Municipality of Nova Gorica and the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. The papers critically reflect on the Athens Charter, which established the principles of a functionalist city at the 4th CIAM Congress (Congres internationaux d'architecture moderne) in 1933. The case studies discuss cities, which were newly built in the 20th century in the Soviet Union, Germany, Italy, the Baltic States, Iran and Slovenia, with Nova Gorica at the forefront. They are organized into seven thematic sections, covering a number of previously poorly researched topics: the foundation and establishment of a functional city, the centres of new functionalist towns and the identity of a town, monotony or diversity of modernist residential architecture, the forgotten and decaying industrial heritage, religious architecture in new functionalist towns, monuments in the public space of functionalist city and mapping and visualization of a town.

COBISS.SI-ID: 304420608The book is the first richly illustrated overview of art in the Goriška region from the Middle Ages to the present day and contains the latest knowledge about the most beautiful and most important artistic monuments in the area of ??the Municipality of Nova Gorica. A large part of the book is dedicated to architecture and art after the Second World War in the completely newly built border town of Nova Gorica, which in 2018 celebrated its seventieth anniversary. A longer introductory text on the history of Goriška and the formation of Nova Gorica was written by Branko Marušič, a long-time collaborator of the Nova Gorica Research Station ZRC SAZU, and Helena Seražin wrote an introductory text on art in the Goriška region. Other texts for the book were contributed by almost all collaborators of the France Stele Institute of Art History ZRC SAZU in collaboration with the curators of the Goriška Museum Kromberk - Nova Gorica and collaborators from the Department of Art History of the Faculty of Arts, University of Maribor. At the request of the co-financier, the Municipality of Nova Gorica, which will use the book as a protocol gift, it was also published in English (BENCE, Gorazd, SERAŽIN, Helena (editor), MOHAR, Katarina (editor). Art at a cultural crossroads: the Municipality of Nova Gorica, 1st ed. Ljubljana: ZRC Publishing House, 2020. 192 pages, illustrated ISBN 978-961-05-0479-5. [COBISS.SI-ID 32116739]). On the basis of this book, an art guide was prepared for the Municipality of Nova Gorica (BENCE, Gorazd, BREŠAN, Katarina, FIGELJ, Klavdija, KOŠAK, Tina, KRMELJ, Vesna, LAZARINI, Franci, MARUŠIČ, Branko, MOHAR, Katarina, OTER GORENČIČ , Mija, RAKOVEC, Andreja, SERAŽIN, Helena, VODOPIVEC, Barbara, SERAŽIN, Helena (editor). All four books were edited by Helena Seražin.
C.02 Editorial board of a national monograph
COBISS.SI-ID: 20621315As part of the project, we published two books from the series Art in the Pocket, which is supported by the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts as a project of national importance for the protection and preservation of Slovenian cultural heritage. As the 17th volume in the collection, a book about the municipal building in Nova Gorica was published, which presents the reader with the ambitious design for the new Slovene Littoral town of Nova Gorica which – according to architect Edvard Ravnikar – was intended to “shine over the border”. The author of the plans for the Town Hall, architect Vinko Glanz, and painter Slavko Pengov, who was entrusted with painting one of its main halls, were among the most coveted executors of public commissions both before World War II and after 1945. With its specially commissioned artworks and outstanding architecture the Nova Gorica Town Hall is an artistic masterpiece, the pride of the young town, and a testament to an exciting time in Slovenian history. The authors of the book are Alenka Di Battista and Katarina Mohar, and it was edited by Marjeta Ciglenečki. The book Ravnikar's Housing Blocks in Nova Gorica, published by Alenka Di Battista and co-edited by Marjeta Ciglenečka and Helena Seražin, was published as the 20th volume in the collection. The entire town of Nova Gorica, the core urban plan of which was prepared by Edvard Ravnikar, one of the most prominent Slovenian modernist architects, is supposed to represent to the whole world a symbol of a modern and advanced new country. Ravnikar also prepared plans for residential buildings in Nova Gorica, which were the first newly built buildings in the town. Since there was a shortage of apartments in the rapidly growing Nova Gorica, the residents keenly anticipated them. The authoress describes the construction of the apartment buildings and the life in them as a reflection of post-war conditions and appraises Ravnikar's functionalistically designed apartments as ground-breaking in the design of the living culture of a wider area. Alenka Di Battista concludes her text with an appeal for a proper evaluation and protection of post-war modernist residential architecture. Both books were presented to the general public through public lectures and guides. Several professional articles published in the Reports of the Research Station of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Nova Gorica were also intended for the preservation and protection of cultural heritage and raising public awareness of the importance of modernist architecture: - DI BATTISTA, Alenka. The beginnings of the Park Hotel in Nova Gorica. Report of the Research Station ZRC SAZU in Nova Gorica, ISSN C504-2240, 2019, no. 16, p. 15-23, fig. - FIGELJ, Klavdija. Lehrman's Argonauts, a desire for originality at all costs. Report of the Research Station ZRC SAZU in Nova Gorica, ISSN C504-2240, 2019, no. 16, p. 24-35, fig. - FIGELJ, Klavdija. Throughout the project, field research and research work in libraries and archives on individual art monuments took place, the results of which are partly already published on the website www.novagoricaart.si, and were also collected for the purpose of another project of national importance for the preservation of Slovenian art heritage - artistic topography of Slovenia.
F.27 Contribution to preserving/protecting natural and cultural heritage
COBISS.SI-ID: 303034368Especially for this project, following the example of the website www.mariborart.si, which was prepared by the France Stele Institute of Art History ZRC SAZU within the project Fine Arts in the City of Maribor (L6-4315), a website was created, which was developed and prepared in technical form by the partner FERI UM. For this purpose, they innovatively used the web platform Wordpress and presented this innovation at the international conference CECIIS (HUBER, Jernej, GRADIŠNIK, Mitja, HERIČKO, Marjan, SERAŽIN, Helena. Rapid development of an art history web portal using the WordPress platform. In: STRAHONJA, Vjeran (ed.), HERTWECK, Dieter (ed.), KIRINIĆ, Valentina (ed.) Together with the staff of ZRC SAZU and the Faculty of Arts in Maribor, who contributed content, they prepared the website Modmapng - www.novagoricaart.si for the website of the Municipality of Nova Gorica, which contains the following content: - Personalities: short biographies present the life and work of more than 70 personalities who are in one way or another connected with the history of Nova Gorica and Goriška. - Monuments: these are descriptions of individual sacral, secular or public monuments and modernist buildings from Nova Gorica. - Paths through art monuments: two itineraries have been prepared and are being supplemented: Alley of Merited Women and Men in Nova Gorica and Path through Sacral Monuments - Events: here we recorded all major events that were organized within the project or were related to it - Publications: this tab is intended for presentations of printed publications and publication of publications in electronic form. - Exhibitions: a tab dedicated to online exhibitions. At the moment, Andrej Furlan's photographic exhibition Silent Witnesses is presented on this page. - Interactive: it presents an interactive presentation of the fresco History of Primorska in the Green Hall of the municipal building in Nova Gorica, which is otherwise inaccessible to the general public, and published two short films prepared for this project with a 3D virtual presentation of this hall and the creation of Nova Gorica. It also includes 3D visualisation of Ravnikar's Housing blocks. - The creation of the city: 3D visualization of the creation and growth of the city of Nova Gorica, which with a very accurate drawing allows mapping of individual art monuments in the city and interactive connection with the content on this and other websites. The website has been prepared in such a way as to enable the addition of new content and will be able to be used for both tourist and pedagogical purposes and for the protection of cultural heritage. Following the example of this website, FERI has also prepared websites on the Wordpress platform for other projects of the France Stele Institute of Art History on ongoing institute projects funded by the ARRS.
