The occasion of the hundred years of historic continuity, which we usually willingly celebrate, is accompanied by the emergence of an immense machination that concerns the understanding of the sense of humanity. Today, we find ourselves in a situation rendering even the labels of “the humanities”, “humanism”, and “humanitarianism” as mere pretense with regard to what has befallen the fundament of the dimension of being-human under the banner of progress supposedly upholding the established order. Contributions in this year’s international issue of the journal Phainomena entitled ONE HUNDRED PER CENT discuss the philosophical-historic and socio-critical aspects of the contemporary condition humaine.

COBISS.SI-ID: 29705216For several years the Institute Nova Revija for the Humanities has been—many times also in cooperation with local as well as foreign institutions—organizing thematic discussions and conferences, the fundamental purpose of which is to establish the principle of engagement with public affairs against the prevailing concept of confrontation that has defined our past and incapacitates the prospect of a productive social argumentation. Constant measurement of power can in the short term be of benefit, but in the long term it can become detrimental, because it lacks the virtue of measure worth striving for. However, not only measure and criteria are at stake, but also intentions and direction. Educational, cultural, scientific, technological, environmental, media, religious, economical, financial, political, and other systemic aspects of the management of a society are bereft of validity, if they do not demonstrate responsibility for the citizens’ well-being and human dignity. The mentioned fields of society, therefore, call for an engagement with the relations and the circumstances within Slovenia.

COBISS.SI-ID: 292610304With regard to the problem of the other as it gives itself to be encountered in the dialogical movement the paper discusses the principal points of contention between two conflicting, but nonetheless complementing philosophical stances: the hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer and the phenomenology of Bernhard Waldenfels. The intention of the consideration of the confrontation between Gadamer’s compelling advocacy of the primacy of question in his conceptualization of hermeneutic experience and Waldenfels’ critical reassessment of the phenomenon of answer in his theory of responsive rationality, between opposing positions that, thus juxtaposed, by themselves circumscribe the basic elements of dialogue, is not – and cannot be – to overplay or to underplay the significance of either of them by comparing its pertinence tothe counterpart, nor to establish an unsurmountable frontline between them, but by re-tracing the converging and diverging traits at the crossroads of their paths attempt to re-approach exactly and expressly the openness of the “inbetween(ness)” of (our) being and thus show (anew) – nuanced from (within) the viewpoints of both authors – the way the other comes into play (to be encountered) with-in (the medium of) dialogue.
