The paper was presented on the international conference organized by The Memory Studies Association. It analyses some attempts of reconciliations after the Istrian exodus, the event, which significantly influenced the formation of parallel and conflicting national memories. Competitive national public discourses on the reasons for massive migrations and the influence of the recent sporadic attempts of international reconciliation on the divided collective memories in Istria are analyzed. In addition to public discourse the author analyses some alternative forms of memory, which try to appease the communities in Istria, which live as “strangers either way”, each of them with its own collective memory based on the uniqueness of their victimhood.
