We conducted a study in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, where it has been previously shown that the low dose combination of fluvastatin and valsartan after one month of treatment improves functional and morphological properties of the arterial wall. This combination, in the same time interval, also reduced the inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters in these patients. The observed improvement in the arterial wall parameters and the reduction of the parameters of inflammation and oxidative stress correlated among eachother, indicating one of the potential mechanisms of action of the used drugs at low doses.

In addition, in rats, preventive action of low-dose fluvastatin, valsartan, and particularly their combination on the arterial wall has been shown to be more effective than the action of high, therapeutic doses. It turned out that all functional parameters (endothelium depend relaxation of the thoracic aorta, ischemic reperfusion injury of the myocardium), as well as the biochemical paramteres (increase in nitric oxide, reduction of asymmetric dimethylarginine), as well as the favorable expression of genes (for nitric oxide synthase) were mostly improved by use of a low dose combination of fluvastatin and valsartan.
