A method for determining the target displacement based on a single-degree-of-freedom-model was developed and proposed to be included in the final draft of Eurocode 8 standard. The proposal was with few amendments adopted as a normative Annex to the final draft of the new standard Eurocode 8. The proposed method has several advantages compared to the conventional method included in the current standard, since it enables the elimination of the method error by improved idealization of the pushover curve and the determination of the seismic requirements for precisely defined accelerogram. The method can also be used a basis for a dynamic analysis of a building stock during an earthquake. As it is already included in the final draft of the standard, this proposal, in some way, facilitated a better connection between design of a building according to Eurocode 8 and an assessment of the seismic risk for a wider area.
F.31 Development of standards
COBISS.SI-ID: 8273505One of the research task of the project is the analysis of legislation for earthquake resistant design of structures. For this purpose, the Eurocode 8 was closely examined with an emphasize to check whether the standard provide sufficient data for the seismic certificate. On the basis of this research, a topic of a graduation thesis was proposed, in which a student investigated the seismic resistance of a precast reinforced concrete building according to the Eurocode 8-3 standard. In the thesis, methods based on linear elastic analysis, i.e. the lateral force method and the q-factor method, were used for the estimation of the seismic effects on the structural elements. Due to shortcomings of Eurocode 8-3, the resistance of the beam-column joints was determined according to other studies. The structure was modelled and analysed with the computer programme SAP2000, whereas the programme DIAS was used to calculate flexural resistance of columns. Presented are design checks for significant damage (SD) limit state and limit state of damage limitations (DL). The results show that the beam-column joints were the critical structural component of the investigated building. These structural components were not in agreement with the SD limit state criteria taking into account the verification of the shear strength of the beam-column joints, for which the seismic demand was obtained either by the lateral force or the q-factor method. On the contrary, the shear strength of the columns was found sufficient in the case of both methods of seismic analysis used. However, the flexural strength of the columns was insufficient if the seismic action effect corresponding to the SD limit state was obtained by using the q-factor method. Moreover, it was found that the requirements corresponding to the DL limit states are fulfilled. It was concluded that the investigated precast concrete building is not in accordance with the standard and that the standard may be used for issuing simplified seismic performance certificate of such buildings.
