In this article for general public gravitational waves and the importance of their first direct detection by LIGO observatory are described. Gravitational wave event GW/GRB 170817 is presented in some detail, including its importance for the birth of multi-messenger astronomy and contribution of Slovenian researchers.

COBISS.SI-ID: 4949755In this article for general public the developing field of astrophysical transients is described. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope project is presented, in which Slovenia recently became an international partner. One of four main science goals of this project are observations of variable and transient sources in the sky.

COBISS.SI-ID: 4909563First International Astronomical Union Symposium in Slovenia: In an open international call A. Gomboc proposed and won the organization of the first International Astronomical Union Symposium held in Slovenia, entitled "New Frontiers in Black Hole Astrophysics", which marked the 100th anniversary of Schwarzschild's theoretical prediction of black holes and 100th anniversary of Einstein's prediction of gravitational waves. A. Gomboc organized also several public events (i.e. exhibition about black holes in the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia, public lecture by Prof. Sheila Rowan about gravitational waves on the 1st anniversary of the first direct gravitational wave detection by LIGO observatory etc.). A. Gomboc acted in the organization of the symposium as: chair of the Scientific Organizing Committee, chair of the Local Organizing Committee, and chair of the session on gravitational waves. During this project Cambridge University Press published proceedings of this symposium (A. Gomboc acted as the editor): IAU Symposium 324: New Frontiers in Black Hole Astrophysics, Cambridge University Press.
