Serious problems of the vulnerability of the existing water source in the Postojna-Pivka area have in recent years reflected in repeated problems in securing and supplying users with safe drinking water. In the last year activities started in search of a new, additional water source in the area of Pivka and Postojna municipalities.
F.27 Contribution to preserving/protecting natural and cultural heritage
COBISS.SI-ID: 40078125Karst aquifers are abundant, but vulnerable water resources. The communities supplied by the fresh water from karst aquifers are therefore under a constant threat of shortage of water quantity and quality, particularly if they rely on a single source. Such is the case of Postojna and Pivka municipalities in Slovenia, where several shortages occurred during last few years. This project aims at setting new standards in search, protection and use of reliable water resources in karst areas.
F.24 Improvements to existing system-wide, normative and programme solutions, and methods
COBISS.SI-ID: 2781891Members of the project group perform and develop the postgraduate study program Karstology at the University of Nova Gorica. The program is part of UNESCO Chair on Karst Education. The cited dissertation, prepared under the mentorship of a member of the project group, also discusses a contact between dolomite and limestone at the foothills of Planinska Gora. The aquifer in dolomite stores important quantities of groundwater, which could be used as alternative water source for the Postojna and Pivka municipalities. A detailed geological and geomorphological study of the area is the basis for the assessment of possibilities of its use.
