The monograph are supplementing my thoughts on Prekmurian language in the previous monograph Poglavja iz zgodovine prekmurskega knjižnega jezika (2013); therefore, I make a distinction between (former) literary norm and (modern-day) dialect. The story of the origins, geographical context, development and decline of Prekmurian literary language and its transition into dialect form (due to the formation of a uniform Slovene literary language) is thus getting its final lines and enables a different view on the development of Slovene language, emphasizing the dual development in the central and eastern Slovene language area. Until the formation of “Newslovene”, these were determined by literary Carniolan and Prekmurian. I emphasise, in particular, new insights on Prekmurian, which enable the understanding of its literary (in the past) and dialectal (present) characteristics.

The monograph provides the results of linguistic analyses carried out on samples from various media: film, theatre, radio and popular music. Overall, authors have paid particular attention to Non-standard social varieties, from regional colloquial language and urban language to the dialects of north-eastern Slovenia. The work thus combines dialectological and sociolinguistic studies, emphasising the importance of selecting an appropriate linguistic variety for public use, whether that use is to broadcast on the radio, to express oneself in song lyrics or to flesh out a character in a film or play.

The title Between the Word and the Word Phrase highlights the lexicological focus of the monograph embracing both the field of word formation and the field of phraseology and examining them through a corpus-based analysis. The relationship between the word and the word phrase is emphasized in the two basic chapters, which are connected through a third dimension – the interpretative approach based on linguistic culturology. This approach highlights the culturally-oriented perception of the world by a linguistic community as it is reflected through language. The monograph explores these topics in the lexicological chapter, which combines ethnological, semantic and phraseological data from the general corpus Gigafida and the specialized corpus TURK to examine lexical units such as kaša (‘porridge’), kokoš (‘chicken’), voda (‘water’), odlika (‘virtue’) and odličnost (‘excellence’). In addition to this, it includes the analysis of word formation based on a cognitive linguistic approach, which is new in Slovene word formation. Considering the morphemic and overall formational flexibility of the Slovene language, the cognitive approach offers many new possibilities for the interpretation of complex words as symbols created through the association of the phonological and semantic structure.

The article presents the research findings on the use of various social varieties of the Slovenian language, i. e. Standard and Non-standard language, by the students studying Slovenian language and literature in Maribor. A brief introduction is followed by a description of language culture and its efforts to improve the subject matter and the importance of the norm in a language with rich social language varieties use. The research indicates the largely positive attitude of young people to the use of their own dialect in different language situations thus shifting the society's traditionally negative attitude towards the use of dialectal language, perceiving it as a value and as an indicator of one%s personal and national identity. General dialectal characteristics are distinguished in non-formal communication and the informants' switching between the Standard language and the dialect in non-formal communication is a rare occurance, showing that the environment of schooling and the field of study are not prevailing influence factors in choosing a specific social language variety.
