Abstract
The starting point of investigations in scope of this research programme is the material and spiritual artistic heritage in the territory of the present-day Slovenia. The basic objective of the programme is to contribute scientific and expert results which will bring new findings, deepen and widen the knowledge about the art and art history of Slovenia and place them into a corresponding European context, and to simultaneously raise awareness of the European significance of art monuments and their suitable protection among the wider public. Research will focus on all the fields of visual arts as well as architecture and town planning from the Middle Ages up to the 20th century in corresponding historical contexts in the European space (research of individual periods by compiling corpuses and comparative analyses; Medieval art, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, golden altars, sculpture and painting of the Early Modern Period, 19th century art and architecture, 20th century architecture and town planning, specifically between the Wars, architecture of Slovenian Coastal region, industrial architecture, art and architecture in North-East Slovenia in the 20th century). A special focus will be given to research of monastic art (Cistercians, Carthusians, Capuchins, Franciscans etc.), political iconography (including the influences of secular individuals on iconographic programme in sacred architecture, national iconography of saints, miraculous images, public commissions within various periods/states in 20th century Slovenia), the relationship between memory and monuments (sacred and secular memoria, art and politics), migration of artists, reception of art, commissions, collecting (by the ruling and aristocratic families, religious orders and the 20th century Yugoslav economic and political elite) and the art market; particular emphasis will be given to research of individual artists. The analysis of the state of research, the theoretical foundations and methodological concepts will also be related to research of the history of art history and methodology of the discipline. Research will be conducted by using art historical methodology complemented by interdisciplinary and other (interpretative) approaches, including methods of humanities, social and natural sciences. International cooperation with other institutions, collaboration within research networks and exchanges are of crucial importance for the research programme; the preconditions for this were set by the former common political and artistic space as well as by methodological and comparative aspects. The programme team will regularly disseminate research findings through teaching (especially at the University of Maribor and in doctoral study programmes), scholarly publications, conferences, lectures etc., exhibitions, and support in monument protection. (Photographic) documentation, editorial work and digital art history will be carried out simultaneously with the research.
Significance for science
The researches will contribute to the development of art history by further widening and deepening our knowledge about Slovene artistic past, increasing the entire humanistic knowledge about European past, providing new methodological approaches, as well as by improving Slovenian art historical terminology and university study programmes. The results of the team's researches on research topics such as schooling and migration of artists, patronage and art collecting, exhibition policies, the role of art in public space, art and memory, ideology and politics, and spiritual, social, economic and political contexts in the understanding and interpretation of art, will also greatly contribute to the development of science in the widest sense, since research results will be applicable in a number of other spheres of humanities and social sciences. Furthermore, the interdisciplinary researches in collaboration with technical sciences (mainly informatics and civil engineering) and natural sciences (chemistry, physics) will contribute to the methodological upgrading and the application of the so-called hard sciences in humanities. France Stele Institute of Art History ZRC SAZU is the only art historical research institute in Slovenia which systematically studies the history of art, its institutions and research, and establishes a national documentation database. Its programme team will regularly publish research results as original scientific papers and scientific monograph. They will ensure their international integration and recognition (also by organizing international scientific conferences). In addition, the new findings will be directly incorporated into university syllabus. Another significant contribution of the programme for the development of art historical science lies in the preparation of critical monographs of artists’ oeuvres and overviews of art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, with special emphasis on e-accessibility of databases and information. Some of the novel researches will be introduced into the Slovene space for the first time.
Significance for the country
The results will provide a scientific basis, crucial for a suitable protection, restoration, presentation and preservation of art monuments, i. e. for the cultural heritage of Slovenia (apart from this, the researchers also disseminate the results directly by participating in the commissions of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, and by calling attention to the significance of monuments in the press and by organizing round tables and talks). They will help increase historical awareness and thus enforce the awareness of national identity, as well as support Slovene cultural equality among other European nations. The results will also be directly applicable in the in the protection of cultural heritage, university and secondary education, as well as in exhibitions, publishing, cultural tourism and other related activities. Collaboration between users and clients (municipalities, monument protection, galleries, museums, archives, and other owners of art works and monuments such as monasteries, dioceses, castle owners) will continue in the next programme period. Exhibitions, lectures, guided tours, thematic electronic virtual tours and round tables will be organized based on research findings; a number of scientific and popular texts will be published, which will enable a higher awareness and popularisation of art among the wider public (i. e. the Umetnine v žepu booklet series and professional journal Umetnostna kronika). The systematically composed (photographic) database of art works, which is currently being established at the Institute, is also a fundamental inventory for monument protection. Editorial work (monographs, journals, electronic databases) and compilation of contents for websites will also be crucial for cultural development. The researchers will put more focus on translation and terminology.
