Abstract
At the time when the forest based sector is faced with serious development challenges, the introduction of new plants, dimensioning of capacities, safety of supply and selection of suitable technologies are no doubt significant elements of entrepreneurial decisions that can greatly contribute to a renewed stimulus of the sector. Knowledge of the state of raw wood material resources from forests is, in view of tree species, dimensions and quality, key information for a perspective development of primary wood processing. General objectives of the proposed project are optimisation of the links between raw material base and final product/service and augmentation of the added value of wood from Slovenian forests. We shall be able to reach these objectives by improving professional backgrounds for optimisation and dynamic adaptation of forest-timber chains in Slovenia in view of the economic trends and their implementation in the nationally relevant and perspective production chains of the forest-timber sector. Apart from searching and introducing perspective production chains in Slovenia, we wish to focus our special attention on the technological development of deciduous tree-processing, especially beech-wood. The project's general purpose is development of optimal production chains in the forest-timber sector, which is based on sustainable exploitation of forest resources, provides for a safe supply of the required wood assortments, and is concluded in modern and effective plants. The project's Work Packages (WP) follow these objectives from analysis of the actual potentials (monitoring and prediction of quantities and quality structure of wood – WP 2) to innovative approaches as far as supply and marketing is concerned (WP 3) and analysis of modern technologies in primary processing (WP 4) to the final analysis of perspective forest-timber production chains (WP 5). The project results will be of a wide use value, notably for companies in forest-timber production chain and measures to be taken by various ministries (such as Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food and Ministry of the Economy) in the forest-timber sector. The results of the project encompass a wide spectre of applicable data and methods, from having control over wood consumption and trends, analyses of forest technologies and innovative approaches in round-wood supply and marketing, to the development of contemporary technologies of deciduous trees' primary processing (with emphasis on beech-wood) and selection of perspective forest-timber chains.
Significance for science
Within the PER-LES project new methodologies were developed: 1. Methodology for (spatial) implementation of new production facilities and energy plants. The developed tool should help future investors and decision makers during the selection of perspective projects. 2. Methodology for evaluation of raw wood material resources (wood stock) with the help of LIDAR data was tested. 3. A methodology was developed for estimation of actual and theoretical potentials of wood of different quality. The methodology is useful for estimation of potential in specific regions and for production planning (e.g sawmills or cogeneration plants) respectively.
Significance for the country
Most important results of the project with wider significance for the development of the forest-based sector: 1. Internet tool for visualization of production chains and calculation of direct costs WoodChainmanager (http://wcm.gozdis.si/). 2. Round wood flow diagram prepared based on yearly data. The prepared methodology of monitoring and graphical visualization of round-wood flow along the production chain was used for publication “Round-wood flow in 2013” published at the project web page http://per-les.gozdis.si/. The publication was also printed in form of brochure. 3. Methodology was developed for monitoring timber (round-wood) flow in Slovenia, which is important for reporting at the international level (UN/ECE, FAO, ) 4. In the bulletin "From science to practice in the forest technicians" news and results related to the project were published. Due to very positive response of the end users, the bulletin will be published also after the end of project. 5. Modern wood processing technologies were analysed, with special emphasis on possibilities of multilayer wood composites production. 6. We also present the developed methodology for practical optimization of wood skidding (annual round wood skidding, skidding with tractor, transport with forwarder).
