Abstract
The main goal of the project is improvement and further development of conceptual mathematical models, especially two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional models simulating processes in the aquatic environment and in the air. The implementation of a curvilinear grid has several benefits: the numerical mesh can be better fitted to irregular boundaries of the flow domain and as a consequence the computational time can be significantly reduced while the accuracy is increased. Some up to date numerical methods and turbulence closure models in the vertical direction were also tested. New boundary conditions describing heat exchange at the water surface of stratified lakes and reservoirs were introduced, which enables to simulate phenomena of thermal pollution. Field measurements of hydrodynamic circulation and tracer dispersion in the Bohinj Lake and laboratory experiments were performed and analysed in order to calibrate and verify mathematical models. Practical aplications of the model were in Slovenia (thermal pollution of the Sava River) as internationally (Mexico, French Polynesia).
