Significance for science
The research project was designed to determine the optimal startegy for adaptation to high altitude. On the basis of the successfully completed projects, we concluded that the optimal strategy is sleep high-train low, whereby subjects slept at an altitude of 2500 m and lived and exercised at the altitude of the Olimpic Sport Centre Planica (940m). The research also demimnstrated the effect of exercise on respiratory muscles during normoxic and hypoxic exercise. On the basis of our results were able to disprove the theory of the "normobaric oxygen paradox", which suggests that EPO concentration is elevated as a result of the magnutude of change in the partial pressure of oxygen (PO2). Our results clearly demomstrate it is the absolute value of PO2 that is critical to the production of EPO. On the basis of this theory, oxygen breathing has been advocated for anemic patients in clinical settings. Due to the negative effects of long-term oxygen breathing, and the demonstrated lack of its effect on EPO production, we concluded that its clinical use is premature, and unwarranted.
Significance for the country
WE established a laboratory for altitude training and acclimatisation in the Olympic Sport Center Planica. The center is used by athletes and alpinists during preparations for a sporting event, or a high altitude expedition.
