Significance for science
Research results from focus groups, representative national/wide survey and family visits results form the basis for the development of a detailed segmentation of Slovenian children and youth regarding internet usage which will contribute to broadening the classification of children and youth online. Methodologically, the project upgrades the findings of the researchers contributing to the EU Kids Online project (Lobe et al., 2007, Lobe et al., 2008). The key contribution in the methodological field primarily presents the new approach of research combining both qualitative and quantitative methods and additionally some innovative methods like videography. A valuable contribution present also findings on methodological issues of measuring children's and parents experiences simultaneously.
Research database is widely being used for master and bachelor degrees dissertations under supervision of project leader. So far, seven students have finished their master and undergraduate thesis using this data set, and five more in the process.
Significance for the country
Collecting and presenting data about the activities of Slovenian children and youth online and how important the role of ICT is in young people's lives is the first step for developing an effective political and educational agenda on these issues in Slovenia. The data serve as the basis for preparing initiatives for promoting and raising awareness about safe Internet usage and creating positive online opportunities for youngsters in Slovenia. Organisations and projects like Safe-si, a Slovenian awareness node, Spletno oko, a Slovenian hotline for reporting illegal content, and Nasvet za net, a Slovenian helpline for youth having online troubles, and also other similar organisations benefit greatly from having data about children online when creating strategies for raising awareness among their target groups (i.e. children, youngsters, parents and teachers). Ensuring that parents (and teachers) obtain the key information and recommendations regarding how to raise children into responsible users of ICT is of crucial importance in contemporary information society ? and even more so taking into account that parents (and teachers) are in many cases less digitally literate than their children (which in turn creates a gap between them and a barrier to effective media education).
The results of this detailed study also give much needed information to the creators of online content regarding what is the content for children and youth that is missing in the Slovenian market and wanted by the youngsters themselves. This will create the opportunity for creators to provide content that is interesting, educational and fun for the target group.
Through detailed analysis of the survey data we were be able to identify the specific characteristics of young Slovenians’ online behaviour in comparison with existing European data regarding the differences in the cultural, political, educational and economic context, which will pave the way further on for a clearer and more targeted European policy in Slovenia (such as the activities of Inhope, eNASCO, Insafe, the Dynamic Coalition for Child Safety Online).
Dissemination of results has taken place via project webpage www.mladinanetu.si, organisation of film screening in various Slovenian cinemas, and through press releases in printed, radio and TV media. All this has contributed to awareness raising and enhancing knowledge of public, parents and teachers about how Slovenian children really use internet, what risks do they encounter and what benefits does it bring in their everyday lives.
In so doing, Slovenia can be included in many international comparative studies that have hitherto excluded us.
