Significance for science
Migration is at the heart of the political debate in Europe and, for a few years now, has been one of the strategic priorities in the external relations of the European Union. This is reflected in numerous initiatives of the EU commission to science to address the issue, including putting a focus on migration themes in the Seventh Framework Programme, NORFACE and DAPFHE III programs.
In Slovenia, the interest of the state, society and branches of certain professions has also increased. The number of researchers, institutions and research dealing with migration issues is on the rise, but nevertheless some important issues have been insufficiently covered or even overlooked. One of those issues is most certainly the phenomenon of ethnic economy, which has a significant impact on the economy and society of the host country, as well as on the immigrants themselves. The issue is linked with the question of integration of immigrants into the host society and successful (or unsuccessful) promotion of the intercultural dialogue. These issues are most important for the 'nationality question' research field.
The research has therefore focus on identifying the consequences of setting up ethnic economies for the overall Slovenian economy, their potential contribution to successfulness and innovativeness of companies, and to research the benefits of a more successful integration of labour migrants in Slovenia, thus potentially encouraging the intercultural dialogue.
Significance for the country
Direct impact of the research for the Slovenian economy and society is in obtaining the knowledge of how do ethnic economies influence the existent economic sectors in Slovenia and the mechanisms of the welfare state and its policies. Another issue that arises is the question of integration, which can be more or less successful, depending on the employment policies of individual states.
Direct impact of the project for the economy is as follows:
Informing and providing recommendations to the state institutions, including the Employment Service of Slovenia, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia, Chamber of Craft and Small Businesses of Slovenia, Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Affairs and Ministry of Interior about specifics of setting up and functioning of ethnic economies. Guidelines and recommendations can efficiently contribute to:
- providing useful assistance in establishing ethnic businesses
- raising the employment levels
- ensuring enriched, more interesting supply of products and/or services and filling the niches in the existing economy
- enriching the Slovenian tourist offer
- raising competitiveness and thus improving the supply
- limiting marginalisation of certain vulnerable groups
- raising the employment levels of populations that face difficulties in finding a job (elderly, immigrants with deficient knowledge of the language)
- introducing and improving certain services that have so far not been available
- promoting successful integration of labour migrants into Slovenian society and encouraging intercultural dialogue.
