Significance for science
In this project we changed the paradigm in preparation and optimization of paint formulations by introducing a systematic approach based on an analytical approach whereby the pigments were be modified in a controlled way with the goal to purposely affect selected measurable functional properties of paints (stability in dispersions, integration into binder, influence on colourimetric characteristics, the degree of protection against attack of reactive species etc.). A special challenge was the preparation of dense, protective coatings on the surface of organic pigment without significantly affecting the colour of pigment. The dense nature of the coating prevented penetration of reactive species (hydroxyl radicals, superoxide ions) which estremely improved the resistance against degradation in aggressive enviroment.
Significance for the country
The initiative to start this project was raised by JUB itself rather than by research institutes. Thus, we are dealing with a subject that has been recognized by industry as an important challenge for future. As JUB is very well positioned also internationally, we can conclude that the subject has big relevance for the paint industry as a whole (not perhaps just for our partner). In this context, we should stress that the gathered knowledge will also have long term effect on other Slovenian companies (note that there are several other paint companies situated in Slovenia, such as HELIOS, Belinka, Donit...). The project was 100% realized. From now on its implementation into commercial paints only depends on JUB - according to their strategy. In any case, having this new product JUB has confirmed its status of a forefront company offering the most advanced paint based on organic pigments.
