Significance for science
Our original scientific results delivered from the project can be related to 3 fields: plasma diagnostics and plasma system design as well as plasma-surface interactions, which lead to superhydrophilicity of surfaces. In the field of plasma diagnostics, we managed to improve the detection method of neutral atoms with catalytic probes and compare it with other established diagnostic methods. And more, we managed to improve the probe to simple design which can be used for real-time measurements of neutral particles, where neutrals can be distinguished from charged species contribution. With this diagnostic tool it is now possible characterize large industrial scale reactors to control processes and plasma parameters in them. Whereas regarding plasma-surface interactions, we managed to determine elementary mechanisms, which occur on polymer or polymer-matrix composites during plasma treatment. This helped us in explanation of superhydrophilicy phenomena occurrence. Moreover, we were the first to determine surface nanostructuring mechanisms occurring during reactive oxygen plasma treatment. A part of results was published as papers in reputable scientific journals. Nine of them were published in A’ rated journals. Collaborators on the project had several invited talks at various conferences. Only the limited number of the socio-economic achievements is listed in the report. However, it is worth noticing a special issue in journal Composite Interfaces and conference organization from the field of plasma surface interactions with polymers and composites.
Significance for the country
The project contributed to improvement of production technology which is more cost efficient and ecologically benign. This new plasma technology enables the company to persuade the development of new products which are made from typically non-compatible materials and binding them together with stronger adhesion. With this the project, the company has raised its technological level, improved competitive position on global market and kept the working jobs in Slovenia.
