Significance for science
In recent decades some of the archaeological sites that are crucial for the developments in the south-eastern Alps from 3th century to the Early Middle Ages have been partially or fully excavated. The excavations of those sites yielded among other material also large quantity of pottery finds. With rare exceptions those large assemblages remain partially or completely unpublished. In two-part monograph are documented, analyzed and interpreted the results of more than a decade long archaeological excavations in the Late Antique fortified settlement Tonovcov Grad near Kobarid. This represents a major step forward in the understanding of Late Antiquity in the south-eastern Alps. The catalogue of all excavated small finds together with accompanying studies represent a reference work for future publications. An important part of the monograph is the study of ceramic finds. Study of the development of ceramic production through time has helped to resolve some chronological problems related with the origin, development and decline of settlements. The settlement is placed in the broader framework of the western Slovenia and Friuli in the Late Antiquity. In the second half of the 4th century it represented an important part of the Late Roman defence system of Italy and in the 6th century this was a religious and administrative centre of the autochthonous inhabitants of the broader area. Modest evidences of settlement in the early medieval period were also identified. The remains of pottery, found in the ruins of Late Antique buildings, were particularly important. Early Medieval material from Tonovcov grad is an important basis for the study of contacts between autochthonous inhabitants and new Slavic population and thus for the beginnings of Slovenian ethnogenesis. The database provides ceramic material that has so far been largely inaccessible to the public. Due to the uniform criteria the database gives an opportunity to compare material from different sites. It represents the basis for the further studies and consequently for the publishing of the ceramic material together with the others groups of finds.
Significance for the country
As the position of the Late Antique hilltop settlements in the landscape is very conspicuous our better understanding of them will promote their use for the purposes of education and tourism. Late Antique hilltop settlement Tonovcov grad near Kobarid represents an example of a good cooperation with the local comunity. Then settlement is as one of the main points icludeed in the Kobarid historical route. Cooperation with the various museums can aid to the higher quality of the presentations and consequently to the increase of the number of visitors. Members of the project team have been involved in setting up the exhibitions “Kobarid cult landscape” in Tolmin Museum (Tolmin, 2010) and “Kobarid in archaeological periods” in the Kobarid Museum (Kobarid, 2012).
