Significance for science
The research project results fill the gap in the up-to-now unresearched (so ethnologically as historically) and for decades ignored recent history of the Porabje/Raba Valley Slovenes, particularly of the first post- WWII decade, after 1945, which permanently marked the lives of Slovenes in the border territory. For scientific purposes, the evidencing of deported Slovene families (16 families, or 54 family members) and individuals (11), who so far have not been recorded anywhere, is very important. During the duration of the project, we recorded, photographed and analyzed extensive archival materials (about 12.000 pages) in Hungarian archives, highlighting the functioning of the Rákosi regime at international , state, and micro levels. Especially significant is the archival material dealing with the spy war between Yugoslavia and Hungary, and the Reports of the Ministry of the Interior from 1950-1953 on deportations and deportees (primarily on life in forced labour camps). Extensive archival materials on the one hand represent a scientific basis for further research work on post-war happenings on the north-eastern outskirts of the Slovene ethnic territory, and on the other hand make possible the comparison in the research or the dealing with the communist systems in Slovenia and elsewhere. The project result is also audio (interviews with surviving deportees) and video documentation (seven research video films were made). The basis for research films was the interview, and it is a visual document which is an achievement in the field of ethnology. Intzerviews in the Porabje/Raba Valley dialect represent a rich treasury of dialect terminology in the period of the Rákosi regime, not only for ethnologists but also for dialectologists. New scientific findings will enrich the ethnological and historical sciences so in hungary as in Slovenia.
Significance for the country
Project results supplement the knowledge on political reasons for forced deportations in Hungary, with the emphasis on the deportations of the Porabje/Raba Valley Slovenes to the Hungarian Gulag. Project findings have all along been presented at scientific conferences, published, and made use of in pedagogical work at universities (transfer of knowledge into practice). In this way, we made the topic more approachable to the scientific and professional public, as the problems of the Hungarian Gulag are relatively unknown in Slovenia, also due to the fact that the majority of sources is in Hungarian, and therefore out of reach for most Slovene researchers who do not master this language. The new findings are not only important for the development of the ethnological and historical sciences, but also for the Porabje /Raba Valley Slovenes (especially their minority organizations), which can build on the results of the research when planning their development policies.
