Significance for science
The first phase of the research has with evaluated variables and selection of most relevant indicators in four sets (family, labour market, active citizenship, values and other) contributed to methodological reflexion about importance of individual databases and content relevance of individual variables. However before all has our research in the context of contemporary state of the art of research about the presence of women in politics made innovative shift. The studies carried out by now have mostly dealt with the influence of political, social-economical and cultural factors on presence of women in politics. In general had in the field of culture factors evaluated what was the influence of religion on entering of women in politics or the impact of value as gender equality (Norris and Inglehart, 2002). The second approach which studies socio-economical factors has asserted how on political participation of women effects the type of the society, gross domestic income, urbanization, Human Development Index-HDI and share of women in labour market (Siaroff, 2000; Tremblay, 2006). Political factors are mostly focused on the questions as what rights do women have and what is the influence of political system (electoral systems, political parties and special measures). Some of the researchers deal with the relation between the year the suffrage was gained and presence of women in politics, other with electoral system, state constitution (uni- or bicameral parliament), characteristics of political parties and similar. This research has contributed to new knowledge in this field (and with that also to science) in Slovenia as it upgraded already mentioned studies which were till now mostly done and had studied already mentioned factors as for the first time it shed new light on the relationship between private and public. At the same time the contribution of the already mentioned research is important also in European context. In the frame of European research of presence of women in politics were with rare exceptions (Kolinsky) overlooked analysis which will focus on factors which influence on the relationship of public-private. In reference American literature where the tradition of studying gender and political ambition is longer they deal with questions as why women decide in a much fewer numbers to run for office (Davidson-Schmich, 2006; Fulton, Maestas, Maisel in Stone, 2006). By doing that they assert that one of the reasons are also doubts in abilities and skills present at female population much more as in male population (Fox in Lawless, 2004). Or that the chances of political participation of men and women are effected also by private practice, structure of everyday life, the influence of family environment, division of labour in the family, care for children, time and financial resources of individuals as well as their inclusion in voluntary and free-time activities. All that the private life is defined (Burns, Scholzman in Verba, 2001). In this research all the mentioned factors were put in the focus of the research and are there for important also for comparative analysis on the European level.
Significance for the country
The findings of our research project indicates that Slovenia is set apart form European context because of the absence of reliable (statistical and other verifiable) data or the absence of complex analysis which would serve as the indicators of equal position of women in society and especially in the politics. Such case of absence of data is voters turnout regarding gender or official data on (active) membership of women in political parties. This kind of data needs to be collected so that they could be analyzed as they are extremely important as indicators of equality of women and men in Slovenia. This research was also important for development of Slovenia as numerous events were carried out in its scope (presentations on the international conferences, round tables, lectures, workshops). It has spread knowledge about the already mentioned questions and has indirectly contributed to empowerment of women to decide for candidacy or broader participation in the field of politics. Its results were presented at Office for Equal Opportunities and recommendations were made, which could influence on higher chances of women’s decision to enter in to politics and which could had important impact on overcoming of the traditional pattern of gender specific care for the family and work in private sphere. We anticipate that recommendations will encourage political parties to change some structural mechanism within the party and so would influence on recruitment of female candidates for MP's, the mechanisms of selection and on formation of good practices which would made women’s decision to run for office more easy. In this way some of the gender specific practice will change in everyday life of men and women, the equal opportunity politics will be endorsed and before all the conditions for entrance into politics for young parents and especially young women will be encouraged. The project has there for contributed to creation and encouragement of equal opportunities through awareness, as well as by informing the general public through printed publications and discussions on social networking sites.
