Significance for science
The research on cysteine cathepsins regained importance due to their role in several diseases, including neurodegeneration. The relevance of this proposal is of high importance, thus enabling a better understanding of the mechanisms of programmed cell death and protein aggregation. The later being among the current strategies leading to novel approaches in prevention and therapy. The proposed project will strengthen the current research on cysteine cathepsins at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular and Structural Biology at the Jožef Stefan Institute. An important contribution to science is and will be achieved through publications in internationally recognized journals. In addition, the research team had an active participation of in scientific meetings (lectures, posters) and lectures at universities and research institutes in Slovenia and abroad. In order to achieve the goals of this proposal, it is also important an active scientific cooperation, with the laboratory lead by Prof. Shoichi Ishiura from University of Tokyo. Researchers participating in this project are currently partners in European projects (FP7) and participated in other international projects such as the prestigious Human Science Frontiers Program (HSFP) in cooperation with the previously mentioned japanese laboratory.
Significance for the country
The proposed research is of high importance due to the crucial role of proteases not only under physiological conditions but also under pathological, thus providing the basis to carry out ''translational'' research. This proposal is a basic research project of strategic importance. These studies are carried out by young researchers. After completing their PhD, their knowledge can be transfered to the new environment such as pharmaceutical companies and other research laboratories and universities and abroad. This proposal is important for the successful integration of Slovenian research in the European Research Area (ERA) and other international collaborations. Members of the team already successfully contributed in this direction to the recognition of their research activities in the international environment. This project is part of the research activities within the Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Integrated Approaches in Chemistry and Biology of Proteins (CIPKeBiP). The team members actively participate in the organization of domestic and international scientific meetings. The research activities of the team were supported by international projects such as the Human Science Frontiers Program (HSFP) led by B. Turk from the Slovenian side.
