Significance for science
Broadband wireless and mobile networks with support for data services and assured quality that are applicable to areas where self-configuration and self-organization are required represent an important research direction in telecommunications. Their potential is specifically evident in two application domains, that is, commercial wireless and mobile access infrastructures for capacity and coverage expansion towards end-users, and dedicated autonomous communication systems for military communications in strategic and tactical missions and wireless emergency response communication systems. Research results, outcomes and acquired expertize of this project are focused on technologies and algorithms for design and implementation of such broadband networks of the fourth generation (4G), using advanced admission control mechanisms that allow for efficient service provisioning with well-defined performance and QoS characteristics. The added value of the completed scientific research work is: 1. in the field of new generation of admission control mechanisms and algorithms applicable to 4G broadband mobile systems using overlay SON techniques; 2. in efficient transfer of knowledge and best practice into applicative and industrial research aiming at design and implementation of commercial and professional broadband mobile systems with self-organizing and self-healing characteristics and assured quality of service. The research outcomes represent significant contributions in terms of accelerating scientific and applied research activities with an emphasis on design and optimization of distributed mesh networks of the fourth generation in conformance with performance and QoS characteristics of the targeted services of the potential application domains. The completed identification and analysis of applicability of such communication infrastructures provides solid grounds for further research, development, implementation and optimization of communication solutions with applicative value and usefulness, either for commercial, security and strategic or community means. Detailed studies of scheduling techniques and routing in uncoordinated and coordinated distributed mesh networks as well as evaluation model design reflect the outcomes of detailed analyses of available scheduling algorithms and represent a basis for further work on optimization procedures and development of new algorithm techniques. Their value is also as a reference framework for comparative planning and simulations of mesh networks with the focus on service characteristics, as well as development of new scheduling and admission control mechanisms in 4G networks. Architectural and functional design of the system with supported next generation of admission control mechanisms represents a theoretical framework for applicative design and implementation of such solutions, while simulation results along with the respective analyses and visualizations provide concrete studies of practically applicable methods and their effects in realistic environments. All addressed research areas are of strategic importance in terms of research and development in telecommunications, where contributions in the form of basic scientific outcomes and applicative industrial guidelines are vital in order to further evolve the domain to a stage allowing for real-world commercial and professional implementations. On the other hand, successful fuelling and execution of applicative and industrial research and development increases interest and investments into the addressed basic research area, which allows for comprehensive high-quality advancements of the area and generation of added value that is reflected in both scientific excellence and succesfull industrial and business practice.
Significance for the country
The telecommunications sector represents one of the key strategic sectors for Slovenia. Given the current situation in the Slovenian industry, its growth and strengthening is therefore even more crucial, while its success depends on the generation and strengthening of strong basic and applied knowledge grounds through appropriately focused R&D activities. Research, development and implementation of enhanced admission control techniques and technologies and herewith assurance of self-organizing, self-healing and quality-assured characteristics represent elemental contributons to the development of next generation commmunication technologies that pave the way for design and implementation of broadband wireless and mobile communication systems of the fourth generation. These represent basic communications infrastructure of the future in nearly all industrial and societal sectors. Further evolvement of the addressed field is of strategic importance in terms of available advanced communciation technologies for accelerated penetration of broadband connectivity, establishment of commercially promising mobile and wireless communciation systems, implementation of tactic military infrastructure and emergency response systems, as well as setup of secure communications-driven digital society as a whole, as envisioned in the Slovenian and European strategic documents. Outcomes of the project directly contribute to the establishment and strengthening of scientific, research and development potential of the Slovenian research and academic sphere as well as its international recognition. Dissemination in the form of publications in various recognized media, attendance of scientists at well-known conferences and congresses, and transfer of knowledge and experience into graduate and postgraduate studies represent only part of the positive effects that enrich the Slovenian research and scientific renome. Through tight cooperation with industrial partners, outcomes of this project are provided also in the form of knowledge transfer towards Slovenian industry, building crucial grounds for development of new opportunities, strengthening of competitiveness of the Slovenian telecommunications providers in the global market, creation of new innovative companies and opening of highly specialized professional positions. Especially worth noting are thematically related basic and conducted applied research activities in cooperation with industrial partners, resulting in intelectual property rights generation and protection with two granted international patents and three international patent applications in the field of 4G self-organized networks, and establishment of a Slovenian start-up company that was succesfully launched to the United States of America markets. Herewith, scientific and business breakthrough potential on the global market and growth of international recognition are enlarged, altogether resulting in globally positive effects on the scientific field, the county and the society as a whole. At the same time, opportunities for further cooperation with Slovenian and foreign partners are opening as a result of the presented activities, either in the form of R&D or applied and commercial projects. Such activities open opportunities for international cooperation and networking, which is a vital element of an ambitious plan for successful exists to international markets and increase of recognition, and provide motivation for sustenance and strenghtening of academic, scientifi and business excellence, which is a precondition for achieving increased added value of the industry as a whole. All of the above impacts are of substantial importance in terms of further success of the Slovenian telecommunications domain and Slovenia as a whole within the European Union and beyond, providing a strategic long-term positioning of the country and the society globally.
