Abstract
The research team (Gregor Tomc, Anton Kramberger and Martina Trbanc) is analyzing processes of marginalization, social exclusion and elite formation in Slovenia in the period of postsocialist transition. Instead of stressing inequality in distribution of resources and discerning the causes of these, the team stresses the questions of integration, of the inclusion of all – marginal groups not withstanding – in social life. Gregor Tomc researches problems of marginalization in the case of young people. He defines biological and social dimensions of youth and theoretically elaborates them in the context of cognitive social science. His basic premise is that inequlity which is embedded in biological differences is more likely to be perceived as legitimate by the members of the community. The hypothesis is being verified on various youth subcultures in Slovenia in the 90''s. Anton Kramberger researches aspects of elite stratification and mobility in Slovenia. He is above all interested in the position and dynamics of elites on ther labour market, in the voluntary and the public sector; in the institutional arrangements and the promotion of professional groups as well as in the processes of the first phase of privatization in Slovenia. Martina Trbanc distinguishes concepts of new poverty, underclass and social exclusion from the traditional concepts of poverty, class and marginality. She emphasizes in her analysis a shift from predominantly vertical to horizontal dimensions of social stratification.
