Abstract
Postdoc research project reveals a synthesis of alkali free liquid accelerator for setting and hardening of sprayed concrete. Sprayed concrete is used in tunneling, for pools and water reservoir construction, for reconstruction and strengthening of construction parts of bridging, power stations… European legislation for construction industry particularly for concrete and chemical admixtures for concrete permits only alkali free accelerator for setting and hardening of sprayed concrete. In comparison with alkali analogue, alkali free admixture offers better mechanical properties of sprayed concrete as well as safer and friendly conditions for worker during the spraying of concrete. The aim of this research project is a synthesis of accelerator, which would not violate existing patents (BASF, Sika, Bayer, Mapei) and which would not be consisted of very harmful and dangerous hydrofluoric acid. HF could be found in almost every valid patent. In this year, a company TKK Srpenica d.d. has applied for patent, which deals with a synthesis of liquid accelerator for setting and hardening of sprayed concrete. A problem is that applied formulation contains more alkali metals as it is allowed by European standard EN934-5. In order to lower alkali content in liquid admixture (formulated in applied patent) an electrodialysis would be studied. Preliminary tests with this separation technique provide promising results. Admixture efficiency would be evaluated by many parameters, which are determined by market and European standards: stability of liquid admixture, dosage of accelerator for efficient setting and hardening of concrete, compressive strength gain of fresh spraying concrete. With successful realization of aims of this research project, which reveals also chemical and economic analysis of (potential) raw materials, TKK would become the only manufacturer of alkali free accelerator for setting and hardening of concrete in southeastern Europe. The company would consequently employ at least two additional engineers.
Significance for science
According to the open literature we have used electrodialysis as a method for chemical sythesis and not only as a method for separation of ionic species. With electrodialysis we synthesized chemical admixture for concrete and therefore extend the application of electro - membrane processes also to chemical (or phisical - chemical) sythesis.
Significance for the country
The project results and the project itself pushed the research team of TKK on higer tehnical and research level. It is expected that the TKK research team would be competitive to other research teams which deal with concerete admixture busyness also due to this research project. Hopefully the project would help to keep and also increase of research positions in busyness sector.
