Abstract
Electronic Data Interchange - EDI is a proven basic electronic commerce technology. Large enterprises (trading and manufacturing companies, banks, transportation etc.) and government agencies (customs, health insurance) are using EDI or are preparing for it in business-to-business and business-to-government environment. Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) did not embrace the new technology yet. Internet as telecommunications technology is offering new opportunities in the ways organizations could exchange data. It is expected that the use of Internet will accelerate development of electronic commerce in all areas. The proposed research project ''''Electronic Commerce over Internet: opportunities and problems'''' will examine new ways of doing business electronically focusing on business-to-business, business-to-government, small-to-large organization using extranets. Attention will be also paied to business-to-consumer electronic commerce. In close collaboration with organizations in Slovenia Internet based electronic commerce prototypes (EDI on Web) will be developed and tested. Since accelerated electronic commerce development is of high priority in developed countries, the research will contribute to competitive advantage of Slovenia''s economy.
