Abstract
Experimental methodology for investigation of ligand-receptor interactions based on high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and molecular force spectroscopy will be implemented and developed. In particular generally appearing problems of large molecular weight of the protein target and low solubility of ligands in aqueous solution will be considered. Development of experimental methodology will be focused on determination of experimental parameters, which allow identification of ligand binding to protein targets and quantitative determination of non-covalent interactions in formation of ligand-receptor complexes. Precise identification of ligand binding is crucial for effective screening approaches. Knowledge of nature and energetics of non-covalent interactions between the ligand and receptor functional groups offers essential information for rational drug design and improvement of theoretical algorithms for investigation of drug-receptor complexes.
Significance for science
The results areimportant form various points of view: a) New numerical and mathematical methods are introduced and used in linguistics and for protein description. In this way the interdisciplinary approach between two very different areas is enhanced. b) the structure of word meanings between the Anglo-Saxon and Slavic tongues are studied. c) New general purpose methods for handling multi-variate data are studied and developed. d) International achievements in both fileds are monitored, evaluated and reported.
Significance for the country
A new computer shell for linking large quantities of words into a thesaurus network was designed and implemented. Using this schell a thesaurus of Slovenian verbs is under development. Due to the fact that we do not have such thesaura in Slovenian languge this project becomes even more urgent and importasnt. About the implementation and availability of such a shell it was reported on two Symposia in Ljubljana. A part of this project is based on the reearch of 'clitics doubling' in some of the Slovenian dialects. This phenomenon is quite frequent in Slovenian dialects on western Slovenian border. Such doubling is actualy, from the meaning-of-the-sentence-point-of-view rather unneccessary, however, this is not a unique feature. The phenomen of clitics doubling is also known in Macedonian and Bulgarian language as well as it is known in several Romanic languages, in Hebrew, Arabian, and in Albanian etc. The comparison of this doubling becomes therefore even more interesting. By all means, handling of such doublings require a specialised sentence analysis from the general point of view beacuse in the generalized scheme the 'place' of the 'twin' has laready been taken by the pronoun. It is suggested that the description and function of of this feature should be mentioned and properly handled in the frame of proposed generalization.
