Abstract
Vernacular architecture in their theoretical aspects is to be the closest to human nature, logics of organising dwelling and use of spatial resources. Vernacular architecture in logics of free market is selectively idealized and however marginalized too. Mass tourist and mass production farming introducing new technological, introducing systematization of processes and high hygienic standards obey the rules and values of vernacular architecture. No doubt this organisational rearrangement is more harmonised with free market ideals (selling world wide, no bottleneck production lines, standards and equalisation of players). In terms of sustainable spatial design blind following of free market statements has pejorative implications (obeying the cultural differences of vernacular architecture). Proposed project combines values of vernacular architecture, standards (ISO, HCCAP) and legislation in the field of spatial planning and constructions. Spatial combinations of tourism and agriculture are tied to standards, full quality production lines and products and market demands. Due to those activities the economics of vernacularity is pushed aside. Observing the emerging growth of eco-farms reveals some deviations between strategy of development and assets of farms, depending on EU funds. Research work: Main role of research work is to produce clear systematically edited catalogue of vernacular objects of selected regions. Full scale valorisation of objects in relation to selected activities it is expected. Valorisation is based on methodology of economics in architecture, statistics of repetition of elements (architectural, construction, composition), mapping of data in situ and data base, comparison of legislative and site / object data. It is planned to execute some feasibility studies including life cycle of an objects. Execution of model simulation of object spatial arrangement and cross reference analysis of events and other dependable is expected. Doctoral thesis represents the theoretical and logical groundwork of proposed project. Gorenjska and Prekmurje region are researching areas, where vernacular architecture is going to be documented and expressed through standards and legislation. It is planned to test final methods and other specific data at selected locations within those regions, as pilot projects. Locations are not yet defined; site depends on final results of theoretical part of project. Expected results: Graphical presentation and schematisation of types of vernacular objects in selected regions; form of is expected in digital wireframe objects organised in a file sharing format (as ASCII, 3DS, data exchange format, VRLM). Digitalisation is essential for data exchange and further simulations such as lifecycle modelling of an object, earthquake simulation, production line management and other organisational and managerial tasks. However the main role of an project is scientific research of vernacular architecture based on new methods as economics of architecture, lifecycle of object and management of cultural heritage, at the end of project the scientific monograph is going to be published. Parts of presentation and documentation are composition rules, proportional meshes and other geometrical schemes, sheets of data (humidity, volumes, areas, sections of constructions, materials, locations,…), most exposed part of monograph are presentation of methodologies of economics in architecture, life cycle, theoretical values and their potential in praxis. Secondly the results of project should be presented to other experts via www sites, where end information packets will be shared to download or be sent by e-mail. Project impacts: Impacts are expected to be multilayered as it is usually in architecture and urban design processes. Scientifically it is expected to be developed new enhanced method of calculating of economics of architectural object (values of usefulness, potential status of parts and final composit
Significance for science
During the research project several small vernacular structures were made recoded (positioning, measuremet, sketching, scale drawings, schemes, textual description). Aim of the project was not just to enclosure with documentation files, however to conduct plain logic into the processes of planning new architecture. Upon documentation files analysis of maintenance and function of structures was made. Structures were divided upon construction (wood, stone, adobe and straw). In Prekmurje region we found some adobe vernacular structures, very rare among the whole built environment! As it was observed those structures have some special tacit knowledge built-in – simple plain logic ruled all the processes during the planning and building of the building. Planning was not paper made, usually was made by simple comparison of nearby examples and then placing observed in new building. The most significant issue of research was finding the planning processes were more in lined with seasons in the year and with Moon calendar. Both cycles are in common with the amount of water or humidity in the materials – an important attribute of constructional materials. Smart usage of local natural material has many surpluses. Fresh juniper branches or any other coniferous tree leak resin (yellow sticky substance). Resin mineralizes after drying and helps to stick together branch and clay grains. Needles of branches extend the connection surfaces between clay grains and wooden branch – reinforcement of the wall. Mineralized resin with clay grains change physical attributes of construction – it prevents water penetrating and the whole part becomes hard as a stone. Theoretical and applied results of project were presented at international conferences (PECSRL Lisbona, MEDITERRA Sardinia). At location in Gorenjska was made an experiment with 1:1 scale model to present how planned revitalisation of horse stable would be seen when constructed. Introduction of experimental test of future presence of building would be most interesting tool when communicating with partners and other clients in planning (accordance organisations, heritage management funds, investors).
Significance for the country
Conclusions of project are usable in planning processes without any obstacle. There is a need of preliminarily feasibility study of a project task to validate spatial, legislative, technical and financial parameters of project. However there are ecological, cultural (heritage, monuments) and other specific conditions (political and historical relations, special funding in the frames of EU funds) to pass through when planning. Among other results the knowledge of functioning of rural economy was explored. At location in Gorenjska some practical application was made – using 1:1 scale model when revitalising horse stable and feasibility study was made. Upon those activities professional arch office prolonged the project towards realisation. In this manner theoretical documentation was translated into practical realisation. In the next two years two small experiment structures are planned (one in Gorenjska and other in Prekmurje) to test materials and joints (wooden, adobe+straw).
