Abstract
Drinking water is one of the basic foodstuffs, therefore the assurance of its quality is of big importance for society. The aquifier in the area of Ljubljana polje is the most important water resource for the city of Ljubljana’s supply of drinking water. Due to the increasing interest of the water users for their own supply, the available amount of groundwater in the aquifer is becoming questionable. The objective of the proposed project is to get new data and knowledge about the aquifer system in the area of Ljubljana polje and use them for development of an information decision support system that will enable efficient management and protection of the described water resource. The system will be based on hydrological model and will enable simulation of the consequences of planned abstractions which will help to define maximum abstraction rate that will assure sustainable use of water resource in Ljubljana polje area.
Significance for science
Intergranular aquifers in alluvial sediments are, due to their extensiveness and high productivity, one of the most important water resources in Slovenia and also worldwide. In the frame of the project we acquired new information about hydrological processes in the study area which can be applied also in other areas with similar hydrogeological conditions. Based on measurements of water levels in Sava river and hydraulic heads in the aquifer very dynamic relation between surface and ground water was proven, as well as high recharge of the aquifer from the river in north-western part of Ljubljana polje area. High dynamics of ground water is confirmed with the results of simultaneous measurements of hydraulic heads in observation wells, distributed across the whole area of the aquifer. On these results estimated groundwater flow velocities show uniqueness the aquifer also in the world scale. Interesting from methodological point of view is applied approach that combines different tools and data into a united information system which enables efficient support for decisions, related to protection and management of water resources.
Significance for the country
In the frame of the project new information and knowledge about the most important water resource in Slovenia – aquifer of Ljubljana polje were acquired. Ground water reserves, rate of their renewal, available amounts of water for abstraction that enable sustainable use of ground water resource were defined and a program for monitoring of quantitative status of ground water was proposed. Mentioned results will be used in the future by the administrative body as a basis for water rights granting in the area of Ljubljana polje. Based on the tools, used in the project, methodological approach for risk analysis of ground water pollutions that is requested by law for defined construction works in ground water protection zones was developed. Results of the model will be applicable for determination of the quantitative status of the studied groundwater body in the frame of the Water directive implementation. Based on the results of the project a proposal for further investigation and upgrade of the developed information system was made. Proposal of the project “Improved management of contaminated aquifers by integration of source tracking, monitoring tools and decision strategies – INCOME” (http://www.life-income.si) was selected for financing by the EU’s financial instrument LIFE+ which supporting environmental and nature conservation projects throughout the EU. This three and a half years project will be performed by more than fifty researchers from four Slovenian and two German organisations.
