Abstract
Sedimentation of inorganic and organic parts in accumulation lakes of hydropower stations appears due to slow stream of water. These sediments fill up accumulation lake. In the case of hydropower station on the Sava River therefore the method and time planning of sediment elimination will be needed as well as the procedure for cleaning, recycling or use of sediments. It has to be defined also the adequately deposit place. These tasks require in the first phase fully characterization of sediments and hydrological conditions in the following range: - Estimation of quantity and quality chemical and mineralogical composition of sediments. - Estimation of quantity and size of the sediment particles according to different water velocity. - Estimation of chemical properties of water according to heavy metal and other chemical substances. - Accompaniment of the temperature and other environmental factors that influence on the changes in microbe population. - Assessment of the bacteria population and viruses. - Theoretical simulation of sedimentation in accumulation with prognosis of time schedule of sedimentation of individual component. On the basis of this data it will be possible to define technology of elimination, cleaning, recycling in deposit of sediments.
Significance for science
Owing to the soil erosive process various inorganic and organic materials can appear in watercourses. Due to the water turbulence, the load is transported in a suspended form or by rolling across the bottom. Quantity of suspended load, its composition and dynamics of transport in the streams have a great influence to the environment. The utilization of rivers can demolish the natural balance of sediment transport as well as the environment and existent ecological system can be changed. For these reasons these changes have to be anticipated during the planning of new hydropower stations. Goals of the researches are preparation of the physical- mathematical model for prognosticating of suspended load quantity, dynamics of its transport and sedimentation in separate streams and in water-storage reservoirs of the power stations as well as determination of suspended and sedimented materials composition for planning the technology for its removing, depositing or using. For this purpose the permanent monitoring of suspended load quantity, composition and physical properties on the selected stream is required likewise the measurement of water velocity vectors and discharges of water. It also be necessary to determine the ground configuration of channel. To prognosticate the quantity of suspended load in streams, its dynamics of transport and sedimentation is very exacting and complex task. For its solving the interdisciplinary investigation is necessary as well as adequate computer capacities available latterly. Selected approach requires new investigated procedures and equipment, and synthesis of knowledge from the field of engineering geology, geotechnical engineering, hydrology and ecology.
Significance for the country
The prognosis of dynamic of suspended materials sedimentation in the streams and knowledge of their physically-chemical, mineralogical and microbiological properties are of exceptional importance for undisturbed and rational working of energy supply structures on waters, development of adequate technologies for removal of water sediments, their deposition or modification and further usage. The investigations of the considered field, that are in initial phase at Slovenia and in the world are important in the sense of exploitation of waters and sedimented materials as well as protection of environmental. Results of research project can be used at hydroelectric power station Boštanj.
