Abstract
The research project will in an interdisciplinary way focus on the structural shifts of Slovene literature and literary consciousness after 1990. It shall deal with the most prominent poetical, prose and dramatic works and essays that were created in this period, including the most prominent translations and the selection criteria influencing Slovene translation politics. Specific literary-aesthetical and literary-historical questions common to all texts of Slovene literature from 1990 to 2005 are going to be followed by the discussion of philosophical, literary-sociological and culturally ideological issues that stem from the reading of literary texts and their reception, i.e. from the literary life and their prominence in media.
The main focus of the research will be on the analysis of problems of different concrete literary and para-literary phenomena and nexus in the period after 1990 in Slovenia – including the critical analysis of some of the attempts of literary-historical explanations and periodisations of literatures belonging to this period, and contemporary canonisation process of Slovene literature. While discussing the nature of the world created in the contemporary Slovene novel, drama, short fiction, poetry and non-fictional prose, the research will also approach the topical question of the self-presentation of Slovenes in the contemporary Slovene literature. The research will theoretically challenge the notions that have been increasingly used in the last years for the definitions of contemporary prose, poetry and drama: e.g. “neorealism”, “new subjectivism”, “new intimism”, “urban literature”, etc. One of the aims of the research is also going to be the presentation and systematic approach to the relationship between the literary-historical denominations like “traditional”, “modernist”, “post-modernist”, “modern/post-modern”) and their possible applicability to the explanation and general discussion of Slovene literature after 1990.
Significance for science
The study is important for the development of science (i.e. literary theory) for a number of reasons. Addressing a field which has been examined fragmentarily or not at all, it develops an interdisciplinary model for the treatment of modern and contemporary literary production, in addition to placing Slovenian post–1990 literature into the comparative context of European and world literature.
Significance for the country
The study analyses structural shifts in Slovenian post-1990 literature and literary consciousness, focusing on their place in the international literary, ideational, cultural and political contexts, as well as on the distinctive features of genre, ideas, and aesthetics marking modern Slovenian literary production and translation practice. In addressing the issue of the portrayal of the world in contemporary Slovenian prose, poetry, drama, and essays, the study also provides answers to the topical question of the national self-perception as displayed in contemporary Slovenian literature. Thus the study transcends the limits of an "intraliterary" subject, involving the fields of the sociology of literature, cultural studies, and cultural criticism.
