Abstract
Particularly in the European environment, information society became a major challenge which instigated a lasting interest in the formulation of principles and methods which tackle the problem of transferring various information related to language. The recognition of the need for free communication which can be realized only within one's own mother tongue lead to the widely accepted principle of assuring creative freedom of each individual in his/her own language, together with the possibility of exchanging information with other languages. This is true for all domains of human activity and creativity, in a knowledge-based society, however, scientific and professional communication – where one is confronted with the so-called specialized knowledge – is particularly emphasized. Terminology management is very important for this type of communication, with a specialized dictionary for each specific professional or scientific field lying at its core.
The goals of the research project are the following: The overview of terminology resources: the research aims at establishing which resources are available for the Slovenian language and to measure the interest for cooperation in different professional fields. As there are various terminology portals available for other languages, our intention is to examine the existing solutions and to evaluate them from the point of view of the specific Slovenian situation. The main objective of the project is to develop the Slovenian terminology portal which would offer basic information on the principles of terminological work and above all make available software tools for presenting terminology in a unified format. It will be designed to enable the compilation of different types of terminological dictionaries to all the interested parties which would be designed and presented in a unified manner. These terminological resources will be publicly available on the web. Simultaneously, the feasibility of linking textual resources with the terminological database will be tested. We wish to examine to what extent terminologically relevant data can be extracted from Slovenian corpora with (semi)automated procedures, which can be later used as the basis.
Significance for science
The results of the research group have revealed new findings, important for Slavic and Romanic linguistics (dialectology and sociolinguistics).
By employing the presented and cartographic material it will be possible to draw a new dialectal profile of the studied area from the viewpoint of various linguistic layers and interference effects.
Significance for the country
The results of the project in the Slovene scientific and cultural area will serve as a tool for thorough and systematic scientific findings as well as a starting point for further dialectological and sociolinguistic researches.
The results of the project will be useful for lexicographers, sociolinguists, dialectologists, as well as ethnologists, historians, sociologists and a wider circle of users, who will thus be able to comprehend the value of their own culture. The results will also be of use in the field of general culturology (preservation of cultural heritage).
The atlas is a unique opportunity for an appraisal and preservation of Slovene cultural heritage in the area of human activity that has long been neglected and has irreversibly been falling into oblivion. The results will also be useful for younger generations, who will be able, through the consultation of this work, to learn about the roots of their own identity as well as the nation’s.
