Abstract
Individual differences in pre-school children are evident not only in their temperament but also in their personality characteristics. Studies of associations between individual differences in children and their social development and sibling relationship mostly included measures of temperament. Proposed postdoc project consists of two longitudinal studies, both involving multi-rater approach and data analysis using so-called trait-centred and typological approach. In both studies, mothers, fathers, and pre-school teachers will independently rate personality characteristics in children using the Inventory of Child Individual Differences (Halverson et al., 2003; Slovene version Zupančič in Kavčič, 2004). Pre-school teachers will also assess children's social adjustment on Slovene version of Social Competence and Behavior Evaluation Scale (LaFreniere e tal., 2001). This procedure will be performed twice with one year in between the two waves. At the second wave of the studies children will enter first grade of primary school. In addition, one of the studies is a family study, including pairs of children from the same families, enabling a research of family resemblance in investigated measures and indirect reasoning about the effects of genetic factors in the development of measured characteristics in children. In this study mothers and fathers will rate not only personality characteristics of both children but also their children’s interpersonal characteristics, using a questionnaire How I see my children’s sibling relationship (Kramer, 2001). The purpose of the project is to investigate contemporaneous and longitudinal associations between children’s personality characteristics (traits, dimensions and types) and their social behaviour (social competence and adjustment problems) in the context of pre-school and school. Furthermore, we plan to examine the similarity between siblings in their personality characteristics and social behaviour, and the role of sibling relationship quality and siblings’ personality characteristics on children’s social adjustment. As a new approach in scientific literature in the field, sibling relationship and their personality characteristics will be studied at the level of dimensions as well as types, and the importance of match between younger and older sibling in their personality dimensions and types will be explored.
