Abstract
Modified wood is already industrially produced in Europe, and the quantities produced and consumed are increasing substantially. Modified wood is intended for commodities in exterior use, such as joinery, fences, claddings, etc. that will remain surface finished with surface coatings, e.g. lacquers or stains. The major goal of the project is to determine characteristics of the coatings with low content of volatile organic compounds (VOC) on modified substrates. It is expected, that modification of wood significantly influences on final properties of the systems substrate - coating. In order to understand properties of the modified wood - coating systems, knowledge on some basic principles (coating penetration depth into modified wood, coating adhesion, UV degradation mechanism, etc.) is essential. Thus, the research of interactions on the interface wood - coating represents the core of the project programme. We believe that the new surface finished systems exhibit higher resistance against weathering and biological degradation. As a result, surface coating maintenance interval could be prolonged which should increase competitive advantages of wood against other materials with less acceptable environmental profile, such as synthetic polymers or aluminium.
