Abstract
A concept of citizenship serves as a focal point of a proposed research project. A concept, originally formulated by Marshall, retains its relevance until present time. A historic moment of transition from socialist to democratic political regime is characterised by reformulated political and civil identity, by inherited social rights and newly emerging social, economic and cultural cleavages. Not unique only to post-communist countries, a political and cultural identity of citizens is challenged also by the process of emergence of supranational, such as European or global "issue oriented" identities. Theoretically sound and empirically well established dimensions of citizenship and national identity could be best analysed from the perspective of comparative multinational research, where one of the best examples of excellence is International Social Survey Program (ISSP), that serves as a main source of data for proposed research. Some of the dimensions mentioned are empowerment, participation, evaluation of political and community life, feeling ob "belonging" an identity, then tolerance and loyalty. Several research designs will be combined in order to gain greater generalization of effects of explanatory variables that could be derived from theory on individual level. Quantitative analysis form yearly Slovene public opinion survey will be extended cross-nationally and longitudinally, combined by qualitative contextual analysis. Inclusion of "macro" level factors, such as the influence of institutional settings, cultural and historical traditions and structural characteristics of society will enable to locate specific sources of differences from comparative perspective. Theoretical relevance of proposed research goes in hand with political and cultural areas of applicability of results. Better knowledge of our society and its perspectives in changing world will be nonetheless attained, that could help to avoid risks and fears of the future, and encourage citizens" participation.
