Abstract
The purpose and the goal of the proposed project is to examine the possibilities and to develop and test in real-life environment the hardware and the software for human as well as man-machine communication for the advancement of productivity and quality of work in hospitals by introduction of mobile communicatons technology developed within the complementary EU 6.FWP IST WINDECT STREP project "Wireless Local Area Network with Integration of Professional-Quality DECT Telephony". This project subscribes to the EU 2.3.1.3 Broadband for all" objective to develop the network technologies and architectures allowing a generalised availability of broadband access to European usersa as one of key enablers to the wider deployment of the information and knowledge-based society and economy. The implementation is planned on WINDECT-enchanched PDA's and access stations with set of applications modules covering various aspects and needs hospital activites. Interfaces to the "classical" hospital information and communications systems to provide support to doctors and nurses by recording and managing information about pacients, visits, drugs and patologies etc. will also be provided.
A key technological element to drive generalised network access is the convergence of different services within one system. Future devices and applications will integrate real-time voice/video traffic and packet data. This will replace the current solution, where in-house networks have two parallel wireless infrastructures: the telephony infrastructure providing low-bandwidth but high quality of service, and the computer network for high data-rate but best-effort bursty traffic. The WINDECT project is therefore aimed at merging both networks by integrating professional quality telephony into WLANs yet keeping high quality of telephony service unreduced. This is planned to be achieved by merging the upper layers of the DECT protocol stack with current WLAN physical layer and MAC layer technology, ensuring quality-of-service (QoS) support through extensions to the 802.11a/e WLAN standard. The results will determine the design of the demonstration system to be manufactured by the partners in the project. The outcome will be DECT-over-WLAN telephones/communicators and access points, which support professional-quality telephony.
Relying on the results of the WINDECT project, the goals of the proposed investigation will be achieved by constructing a pilot WINDECT-based wireless network in one of local hospitals, by interfacing this network to "classical" communications systems in the hospital (above all their LAN and PABX) and by development and implementation of applicatons software for the information services for mobile doctor, mobile nurse and other hospitall staff in need of mobile communication. How could users best be supported will be investigated in close cooperation with medical staff of a partner hospital. The results - including the measurement and verification of operational performance of the pilot system - will constitute integral part of the EU WINDECT project results
