Abstract
Research project Regional Geology of Slovenia comprises seemingly various geological studies, which associated represent a basis for understanding the geological structure of Slovenian territory. Studies will be regionally divided at three levels: on selected areas in Slovenia, on the territory of entire country, and on a level extending to a wider European, and global extents respectively.
The project will incorporate geological mapping, biostratigraphy, tectonics, geophysics and geothermy. Within these main complexes several specialist studies are included. Particular studies of the project Regional Geology of Slovenia may not seem to be linked at a first glance, yet the collective final results will be presented in a form of modern GIS supported geological maps. Basic geological maps as a primary product of the project Regional Geology of Slovenia are used as basis for spatial and social planning, investigations of water resources, geothermal energy and mineral resources, for elaboration of thematic geological maps (paleoecological, paleogeographic, paleoclimatic, geohazard, maps of active faults in Slovenia etc.), for solving ecological problems and for geohazard assessment. Natural and cultural heritage conservation (paleontological, stratigraphical, structural, geomorphological and other particularities, use of natural stone in architectural heritage) is one of applications that are supported by geological maps as well.
A rather great deal of the project will deal with geological issues stretching beyond Slovenian borders to a wider European and global area (e.g.: understanding tectonics and geodynamics at the junction of the European, Adriatic and Tisza plates, understanding global and oceanic anoxic events during Cretaceous, evolutionary contributions to paleontology, etc.). The project regional Geology of Slovenia is essential for the progress within fundamental fields in geology. Its importance is also in strengthening the international influence of Slovenian geological science. The most meaningful and widely applicable primary (or in some cases secondary) results of the project are modern geological maps, which are essential for technological progress of all disciplines exploiting natural sources or dealing with land management.
