Abstract
The proposed research project will give us a better understanding of natural processes, especially those relating the carbon and nitrogen cycling in lakes that represent the basis for understanding of global environmental and climatic changes. Lake sediments can provide important historical information on changes that affected situation and quality of aquatic ecosystem. Stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen are important indicators of temporal changes in fluxes or cycles of carbon and nitrogen compounds. The purpose of this project is to provide new data for reconstruction of paleoproductivity, input and accumulation of C and N in the sediment, and anthropogenic impact on carbon and nitrogen cycling in selected eutrophic lake in remote protected area of Triglav National Park. Combination of litostratigrafic, hydrologic and tectonic investigations together with chemical and isotopic analyses will enable us to gain data that will be used in modelling for quantification of element cycles. In selected alpine lake (Jezero na Planini pri Jezeru), that represents due to its smallness a model environment where the input and output parameters can be controlled, important biogeochemical processes will be studied. Results of the project will be used for study of C and N cycles in bigger sedimentary basins with similar conditions (e.g. Lake Bled).
