Abstract
The project deals with the vegetation dynamics in the succession line of birch forests in the southeastern part of Slovenia. The birch forests form one of the stages in the succession line of fields, grasslands, high stalks, scrubs and birch forests. These forests represent a relatively permanent stage that is maintained by man with its activities (litter gathering, felling). When these activities are terminated, these forests develop further into the hornbeam and beech forests. First of all, the areas whose age will be established on the basis of aerial photographs will be determinated. Afterwards, samples will be taken on these areas according to standard procedures. The vegetation will be listed according to a Central European method. Soil samples will be taken and some other parameters will be measured (e.g. woodstock). The succession will be studied by using a chronosequence method. This method facilitates the study of successive changes in different sites and the modification of species composition as a result of differences in site circumstances or site history. When we get acquainted with the time of abandonment of farming activities (special attention will be paid to litter gathering), the age of stands and/or the commencement of succession as well as age classes can be determined. By comparing diversity (a, b, y) between the individual classes and different succession stages and succession velocity, it will be possible to evaluate the succession process. Furthermore, by means of multivariant methods, we will try to envisage the direction of succession and its dependence on different parameters (time, ecology, anthropogenic impacts). The comparison of characteristic properties of dominant species in individual age classes will also be included. The succession line, succession velocity and succession direction will be established. Additionally, the appearance of functional types, different correlation types with the environmental parameters and the similar will be dealt with.
