Significance for science
The program group is the only program group for the field of ethnology/cultural or social anthropology at the University of Ljubljana, and its members carry out basic research in this field. In view of the fact that the majority of the group are members of the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, it is clear that an important part of the knowledge obtained within the framework of the research program is communicated to students within the framework of the undergraduate and postgraduate study process which takes place at the department, and to young researchers who are trained there. A significant part of the knowledge is also communicated to foreign students of undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Members of the program group, namely, are included in the implementation of the Creole postgraduate study program, which six European universities provide in conjunction; the program is coordinated by the University of Vienna, and the Universities of Stockholm, Barcelona and Maynooth also take part in it. Within the networks Erasmus, Socrates and Ceepus we collaborate with related departments from approximately twenty European universities. Individual members of the program group cooperate in providing postgraduate studies at the Faculties of Philosophy in Priština and Zagreb. One member of the program group will communicate results to students in postgraduate studies of anthropology at ISH, Faculty of Postgraduate Humanist Studies. Part of the research program carried out by associates of the Slovene Ethnographic Museum will be disseminated through the setting up of the permanent exhibition of the Slovene Ethnographic Museum. A member of the program group, Nina Židov, is head of the project and co-author of the exhibition of the Slovene Ethnographic Museum with the umbrella title Contrapuncts of Life and is actively involved in the creation of the first exhibition complex entitled Between Nature and Culture The cooperation of curator Židov in the program group enables direct and immediate application of the research achievements in museum practice, and thus also enables the widest possible mass insight into the most recent results of science. It is very important that the members of the program group carry out research work in the field, both in Slovenia and abroad; with their published monographs and scientific articles and the organisation of important scientific meetings, they have become recognised in the world as the core of development of continental ethnology and cultural anthropology, which effectively combines the continental tradition of science focussed on the domestic space (European ethnology) and science focused on non-European lands (cultural or social anthropology). Furthermore, in a very important segment of the research work they are supplemented by historical and comparative aspects of research. The inclusion of the art history profession further highlights the interdisciplinary approach. Tine Germ from the Department of Art History, through his research into iconography and iconology, will contribute to greater familiarity and understanding of the interactive involvement of artistic phenomena in the process of creating and changing the Slovene identity in European and world contexts. Part of the research will also be devoted to the liminal identities in transitional and post-transitional periods, in which the negative impact of the new social arrangement on the quality of the working environment and dignity at work in particular will be to the fore. This field will be studied by Mojca Ramšak, who, after a review of relevant studies and fieldwork, will attempt to produce guidelines for a higher quality attitude at workplaces, which will above all take into account gender equality and the absence of all forms of psychic molestation, or psycho-terror.
Significance for the country
The proposed programme is in complete compliance with the priority areas stated in the Resolution on the National Research and Development Programme 2006–2010 (ReNRRP; Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia 3/2006, 10/01/2006). It will contribute: 1. to basic knowledge on humans and society, which is important for Slovenian national development (in accordance with contemporary scientific research approaches, the programme will advance the existing scientific knowledge on the Slovenian identites within the European and global context); 2. to development of understanding humanity, Slovenian national identity and its identifiability (the programme will redefine and expand the existing understanding of the Slovenian identities and contribute to their identifiability within supranational context); 3. understanding Slovenian history (the research of oral tradition and analysis of written and archive sources within the project will show how the perception of national history and heritage has been changing through time); 4. to protection of natural and cultural heritage, including research on the Slovenian language (the programme in its entirety focuses on comprehension of identities in the Slovenian cultural space; it will also include research of land use, spatial policies, economic development and social justice; the research of oral tradition will also contribute to studying and preserving the Slovenian language); 5. to transferring knowledge of Slovenian natural and cultural heritage to the international community, and to its preservation (the programme will explore the national as well as supranational space and define those spatial elements of heritage that are typical of and important for the Slovenian national identity and its preservation within the European union and other international integrations and connections); 6. to the recognisability of Slovenia (the programme will research identifying spatio-identification elements that can eventually become constituent parts of promoting the country outside its borders). As the core of the research group constitute the teachers and researchers from the Department of ethnology and cultural anthropology, it is self-evident that the greatest part of new knowledge acquired in the research is being regularly mediated to our students at different levels (bachelor, M.A., and Ph.D. levels) at the Department. Part of the research conducted by the curator in the Slovene Ethnographic Museum manifests itself in the permanent exhibition in the museum, as a member of the programme group, Nena Židov, leads the project and is a co-author of the permanent exhibition in the museum under the title The Counterpoints of Life and actively participates in creation of first part of the exhibition entitled Between nature and culture.
