Significance for science
Most of our research work pertains to basic science and is a contribution to human knowledge in the fields of neurobiology and neurology because we publish our results in distinguished internationa scientific journals. With this, we help that Slovenia is becoming an equal partner in the group of developed countries. We cooperated in the investigation within the 6th Framework Program of the EU in which the tight relationship between the oscilations of cardiac rate, respiratory rate and EEG-delta brain waves were found to be coupled and their decoupling with increasing depth of anaesthesia was incovered. Brain synaptic plasticity was studied in animal models of brain neurodegenerative diseases (like Parkinson's disease), prion diseases and drug addiction, which are all fields od utmost scietific and medical interest. The results obtained in efficient cooperation with international scientific community were presented in high quality journals. Factors influencing collateral sprouting of uninjured axons of the peripheral nerves, which is a surgical method of choice in the most serious nerve injuries, was intensivley studied by members of our group. Research on the plasticity of skeletal muscles related to muscle function is an original contribution to the science of muscle adaptability. We uncovered a new aspect of muscle plasticity, i.e. the plasticity of the components of the neuromuscular junctions, which enables the optimization of the functioning of this synapse to muscle function.
Significance for the country
The results of our research work are nationally important because the represent a way how Slovene scientists are involved in the international scientific achievements in the field of biomedicine, including international scientific cooperation in UE Framework programs and many other forms of international contacts. All this increases the international recognition of Slovenia and strengthens it status of a developed and reliable country. In Slovenia, our research contributes to increase of domestic knowledge, to introduction of new scientific methods and to education of young research workers and scientific upgrading of medical specialists. This forms a sound basis for the development of teaching staff in the field of medicine and high quality education of future physicians. Application oriented reseach in our group yielded an international patent in the field of treatment of drug addiction in cooperation with Lek pharmaceutical company, new technology for simultaneous measurement of brain neurotransmitters in living animals for experimental purposes, and a new device for tremor estimation which is already in use in the Dept. of Neurology in Ljubljana Clinical Center. We also cooperate in successful investigations regarding the detection of protein plaques in the brains of people with neurodegenerative diseases making diagnostics in living patients possible.
