Abstract
The research program titled »Production systems, laser technology, and joining of materials« comprises five research groups having separate work programs, i.e.: 1. Optodynamics and laser engineering, 2. Surface integrity and surface hardening and refining, 3. Joining of materials, 4. Computer-aided integration of project management, simultaneous engineering and production controling, 5. Elaboration of new concepts of product development. The first research program titled »Optodynamics and laser technique« comprises two closely related parts. The first part (optodynamics) includes fundamental research of dynamic aspects of the interaction between light and substance. It is focused mainly on the education of young researchers. The second part (laser engineering) includes applied research and development work in the field of laser processing and measuring systems. It is designed as a systematic R&D aid to the introduction of laser technologies in the Slovenian industry. Optodynamics is an original name for a new interdisciplinary field in which a wide number of phenomena, from photoacoustic phenomenon, laser induced shock waves, optical ultrasonics, laser treatment processes to a very extreme case of laser induced nuclear fusion, can be classified. Hereto belong numerous medical laser treatments such as demolition of kidney stones and gallstones, tooth drilling, and treatment of cataract. The focus of the applied program is closely related to the up-to-date development of industrial laser sources and systems of domestic manufacturers and to the introduction of laser technology in other industrial branches. The second research program titled »Surface integrity and surface hardening and alloying« comprises studies on surface integrity after machining processes such as the prediction of a relation between a microstructure and surface-layer quality, the influence of grinding of quenched surfaces on the size and variation of residual stresses, and studies related to various laser treatment processes such as transformation hardening, hardening by remelting, and surface refinement to improve surface resistance under dynamic stresses, i.e. improvement of wear resistance and thermo-chemical resistance of surfaces of the most exacting structural components or tool parts. In surface hardening a special attention will be paid to hardening by cold deformation, e.g. shot peening, and laser shock hardening. Studies of the condition of iron materials and properties of ferromagnetic materials will be based on the magnetic Barkhausen noise whereas studies of defects and imperfections in a material will be based on ultrasonic testing methods. The advancement and testing of a new method of measuring residual internal stresses using the micromagnetic method based on the Barkhausen noise shows good prospects. The method proposed is new and original and requires development of both new sensors and evaluation methods. The third research program titled »Joining« deals with applications of basic knowledge in the fields of development of cored wires made of maraging steel for repair welding of tools, fusion spot welding with a sunken arc, brazing on glass, determination of arc welding efficiency, laser repair welding of tools. Theoretical starting points for a cored wire are studies of a correct chemical composition of a wire made of steel with a low carbon content and higher contents of cobalt, nickel and molybdenum, and the behaviour of the wire with all the elements in the arc. For the second part (fusion spot welding), a theoretical starting point is the Maranghoni effect, which describes the motion of the weld pool under the influence of various chemical elements. A theoretical starting point of brazing is the affinity of individual metals to other metals and non-metallic materials where it is proposed to study a suitable brazing filler material containing titanium, zirconium, hafnium, etc. The investigation of efficiencies and effect
Significance for science
Manufacturing systems The transformation of manufact. industry form the traditional industry into a new one, which is based on knowledge, innovation and high added value requires different and innovative concepts and methods of manufacturing, which enable better mastering of ever increasing complexity in manufacturing, its sustainable development and high competitiveness of industrial subjects. The research results will contribute to the radical transformation of the manufacturing industry. An original approach to structuring and control of distributed manufacturing systems has been developed, which is well recognized on the global scale. Findings related to product development and production system operations confirm the time is the key element for effective processes. Optodynamics and laser systems Optodynamics. The result of research of dynamic point of view of interactions between light and material is important for the science in a general sense. The knowledge of a special sort of material motion obtained by laser-light irradiation is important for laser machining as well as for laser medicine. Laser measurement systems. The results of the development of laser measurement systems prove to be useful on several segments of basic scientific research in the field of production technologies and systems. The technical development in medicine is aimed at obtaining facts about the functioning of the human body in a non-invasive way as well as obtaining increasingly more objective easurements. Laser triangulation perfectly fulfils both essential elements. The developed measurement systems represent the basic tools for further research. Laser sources. Researches in the field of completely new method for quality switching of fiber lasers based on a single crystal photo-elastic modulator are significant for the science progress. Important results are obtained from simultaneously use of multiple crystal oscillation modes, which enable fast optical response and are therefore especially suitable for Q-switching. Laser manufacturing processes (LMP). We obtained the results which contributed of wider importance to science in the area of optodynamic methods for LMP diagnostics especially in the field of laser processing using ultra-short laser pulses. Optomechatronic systems. The contributions in the form of new knowledge on development and applications of complex optomechatronic systems are obtained. Studies on the influence of various mechanical loads on color gamut of liquid crystal displays are of interest to the display technology. Laser material processing The results obtained in research of laser processing provide a new knowledge in the field of materials and new technologies. Applicative research improved the existing laser technologies and developed new ones for industrial applications. The new technologies are developed to make the work with applications easier. By means of synergy between pedagogical and research work, personnel capable of transferring research results to various industrial branches are educated and qualified. In connection with laser heat treatment, remelting and cladding (alloying) methods for on-line optimisation of the processes concerned are developed and practically tested. Surface integrity was studied, and in this relation energy input was optimized. In all cases of laser heat treatment or other heat treatment processes influences of mechanical post-treatment on surface integrity is considered. From acoustic emission during quenching the quality of quenching is inferred and criteria of quenching-process optimisation were determined. By means of non-destructive testing with the micro-magnetic method and acoustic emission, a technique of rapid determination of material state after any laser, heat or mechanical treatment process was developed. Joining of materials Research and development in the fields of gas metal arc welding (GMAW), resistance spot welding (ASW), laser cladding using mobile lase
Significance for the country
The results of the research field Manufacturing systems allow for a successful competition of Slovenian companies on the global market. The results are also important for companies in the EU and in its vicinity. The integrated system of process-oriented production planning and control allow Slovenian companies to achieve short delivery times, the right quality and low cost-price of products. Research programme results allow for a solution of many open problems in Slovenian companies, which are getting integrated into the single European market. The results allow a considerable increase of added value in SMEs, which prevail in Slovenia but do not have the critical mass of knowledge and techniques required for good competitiveness on the global market. Research field Optodynamics and laser systems: The study of laser-induced phenomena in the liquid-gas boundary as well as gas-solid boundary is important in medicine and is therefore interesting for Slovenian producers of laser systems designed for medical use (Fotona, Optotek). Further, the study of possibilities of optodynamic responses for usage of simultaneously control of laser pulsed processes, is important for producers of industrial laser systems (LPKF, Fotona). Judging from the interest for the triangulation measurement devices developed in previous researches that potential users from the industry have shown we can confidently claim that some devices can be industrialized. Researches and development in the field of fiber lasers arose from the industrial needs and were started on direct initiative of Slovenian laser systems producers (LPKF, Fotona, Optotek). The research results are directly and immediately applicable to Slovenian companies that produce laser systems as a basis for industrialization of a new generation of laser systems. The research group cooperates with Slovene manufacturers mainly in the areas of laser systems optimization, control software development and development of mechatronic subsystems (work-piece manipulation, beam guidance,…). Research field Laser material processing: The laser cutting process and laser hardening processes have been optimized in a way to ensure adequate size and variation of residual stresses and as small as possible deformation of products. Research results on laser-beam remelting and cladding, i.e. alloying, contribute to simpler, cheaper and higher quality repair of damaged machine components and tool parts. The processes introduced worldwide are certainly most appropriate for our metal-working industry. Studies of steel quenching will include cooperation with companies such as Slovenian ironworks and Olma Ljubljana. Taking into account the known world trends, non-destructive testing of materials during and after their manufacture, which is treated in the proposed research and is important for Slovenian industry, will play an important role in production of machine components. Development and introduction of non-destructive methods into industrial applications opens the way for 100% control of product quality. All research proposed is related to Slovenian industry. The entire advancement in the field of laser processing and changes of material properties contribute to a long-term development of Slovenian companies so as to make them competitive to European and world industries. Research field Joining of Materials: The studies will primarily have economic impact for Slovenian companies operating in the metal-working, machine and automotive industries.
